RE: But who will pick our crops?
——————————————————————————————Muleskinner Blues (traditional folk song)

Who’s gonna shoe your pretty little feet?
Who’s gonna glove your hand?
Who’s gonna kiss your red, ruby lips?
Who’s gonna be your man?

Papa’s gonna shoe my pretty little feet
Mama’s gonna glove my hand
Sister’s gonna kiss my red, ruby lips
I don’t need no man.

Notice there’s even an LGBTQ+ tie in.

When I was young in the late 40’s early 50’s, it was not unusual to see illegals in the fields being overseen by picking field foremen representing the companies that got them picked and shipped to the packing houses for grading, sorting, packing and shipping. Even at that time the illegals were working but that was because of lower wages rather than availability.

Wages go for California areas designated by cities:

Modesto $43,506
Berkeley $43,126
San Francisco $41,496
Santa Clara $41,365
Sunnyvale $41,337
Livermore $41,314
San Jose $41,278
Los Gatos $41,026
Daly City $40,810
Santa Cruz $40,668

And if you look in the article, it will say that per wages California is 50th among 50 even with those wages.

The problem they are having is that with the increase in need of the fruits and vegetables they are having to hire more pickers for higher wages so the ranchers can’t afford the bill and their produce dies on the vine. So it’s the price problem and not the amount of pickers needed to get the fields done. And the union, the UFW, keeps applying pressure to hire union workers. The rubber band is stretched tight.

One of the videos of Charlie I watched recently had him pointing some things out to a very clueless self-proclaimed podcaster (who for some reason picked education as his topic despite being wildly ignorant on the subject). One thing Charlie said was that we have 11 million people working in "education" in the US, but fewer than 4 million are teachers. And education scores have been dropping for decades as these bureaucrats, administrators and various other filler have grown and grown.

So as far as I'm concerned, that's 7 million useless eaters right there that can be freed up for service in the fields. And I will fully expect education test scores to start rising in the aftermath. I mean, if the kids are being forced to sit through drag queen presentations and brainwashing sessions about their gender, the teachers might have nothing better to do than teach them to read and do math.

The big secret is that most of the crop picking process is now done by machine. The majority of the field jobs are gone!
