What Jimmy Kimmel suggested to be true --namely, that Charlie Kirk's assassin was MAGA--was false. Did he know when he said it that it was false? I don't know. Did he have reason to know it was false? Yes, but ideology warps people's heads. In any case, we should not want public officials pressuring companies to fire or discipline people for their First Amendment protected speech--even when it's false. It is simply too great a threat to civil liberty. Democrats and liberals are saying that now, but (with honorable exceptions) they have no credibility. When the shoe was on the other foot during the Biden years, they were not ardent free speech defenders. They did not raise their voices against government officers pressuring media outlets and platforms. Too often, they allowed themselves to become apologists for it. Shame on them. But their hypocrisy doesn't justify a complacent attitude today from any of us when government officials pressure media outlets on speech issues. Those of us who did defend First Amendment principles during the Biden years need to be no less outspoken in defending them today. We mustn't be hypocrites. It's bad when media disseminate falsehoods, but the way to fight back is by telling the truth--exercising our own free speech rights to condemn the lying and the liars. It's simply unsafe to trust government officials with the power to, in effect, regulate First Amendment protected speech. It is power too easily abused.

“Those of us who did defend First Amendment principles during the Biden years need to be no less outspoken in defending them today.”
Wholeheartedly agree.
Hey, at last he wasn’t shot for his words.
Hey George,
Turnabout is always fair play.
And it wasn’t the government that fired Kimmel. It was Disney.
Deal with it.
L
Of course he did. He's a jerkwad, but he's not stupid.
The Left has a way about them wherein, once they’re caught in their own damage and destruction, and rather than admitting their culpability, they simply run for refuge and suggest that “...both sides...”, “..whataboutyou’isms...” and how it’s time to turn down the rhetoric or move forward. Their self-proclaimed Moral” High ground” left years ago, if it ever existed. Live by the sword, die by the sword. You are evil.
Not a free speech issue, it is a corporate decision on an at will employee who violated their standards that they are free to set. Sinclair broadcasting pulled the show from THEIR broadcast stations. They have that right.
ABC was forced to “pull” the show as it simply cannot survive on the remaining broadcast stations.
I don’t think he said the killer was MAGA. He was fired over the callous goldfish remark.
Equivocation. Never had any use for it.
This is how they use our rules against us.
Or so they think.
There’s something these people are missing.
They hate America so much, they can’t focus.
Kimmel and Colbert told make beleive bedtime stories to help the loonie leftists fall asleep at night. Now they will become even more crazy.Too bad these two leftist lowlifes will never be held accountable for their lies and the harm they did to the American nation and its people.
I think Brendan Carr misfired by threatening to review ABC’s license over this. Kimmel was on his way out without any pressure. If Carr did not make his threats, the story would have been that the ABC affiliates rebelled and forced Kimmel off the air for his outrageous statements. Now he gets to play the free speech martyr and Trump looks heavy-handed.
If he didn’t know then he’s too stupid to host a talk show.
I’m sure Disney was looking for a reason to fire him other than the fact that his show was a huge money loser. Now Iger can blame Trump.
One could argue based on what he actually said that he wasn’t technically saying that the killer was “MAGA” just that MAGA was trying to insure that no one thought that he was. It’s weak sauce but I’m sure that’s how his defenders will spin it. Ultimately, he knew how it would be interpreted and ABC clearly decided that he wasn’t worth the trouble.
In 2015, Obama signed a law that allowed the media to issue propaganda and false information to the public.
That law needs to be revoked. Otherwise, scumbags like Kimmel can continue using their TV platform to lie to the public. The FCC commissioner should have been aware that left wingers would take advantage of this rule.
As usual, the smelly anal fingers of Obama are the result of Kimmel’s firing.
May not have directly said it, but the implication was there. No way around it.
He hasn’t even tried to defend it. Instead, he is looking for a loophole in his contract to go spew more $hit.
The First Amendment does NOT protect slander. That is why the leftists saying “Hitler” and “fascist” have no legal standing.
“ Did he know when he said it that it was false?”
I work in an office where if anything I ever say is false, knowingly or not, my reputation is completely shot. At the very least
Does a guy speaking on world wide TV have the same standard?
Geeze people are so stupid
this has nothing to do with pressure by “public officials” ... ABC cancelled Kinmmel’s show because Sinclair and Nexstar, which own and/or operate 32% of all local ABC affiliate stations, notified ABC that they were no longer willing to provide Kimmel’s to their stations ... that meant another 32% loss of audience for a failing, likely money-losing, show ... it would be foolish for ABC to continue to throw good money after bad ...
