True enough. But I’ve always wondered how we’d see him today if he had not gone to the theatre that night. Consider that Lincoln wanted to reunite the nation as quickly and painlessly as possible. The Radical Republicans in Congress wanted no part of it and wanted to punish the South. They impeached Johnson for partially following Lincoln’s plans.

Lincoln had great power while the war was being fought, after the surrender, Congress felt that it once again had the power to make decisions. How Lincoln would have fared in this fight, we’ll never know, but he may well have left office reviled by many of his contemporaries.
