Simply make sure it is completely understood an attack on an American aircraft carrier will cause a counter attack of a magnitude minimum 35+ on the enemy country and their heads of state.
Only for dopes. This gen will be long gone before that happens.
Warships go in harm’s way.
The prospect of harm or damage/degradation from enemy action, even significant or catastrophic damage, or putting an entire ship out of action, has never been the deciding factor for entirely ceasing production of a class of vessels.
ICBMs are still by far cheaper than “rods from the God’s.”
The cost has already been reduced about 10x, and is expected to fall another two orders of magnitude.
If the cost of lift to orbit is decreased to the $10 per lb range... rods from God might be cheaper than other weapons.
When a CVN is deployed in anger, the surrounding thicket of offensive and defensive weapons is beyond fearsome. Beyond capable. The baddest of bad ass, spread out 50-100 miles in every direction.
Would you really want a piece of that?
Explain how you know the 20 million illegals Obideno let into the US doesn’t have 200:hundred thousand irregulars in it?
> Who is running Afghanistan today? <
Very good point.
It is said that democracies should go to war reluctantly, and fiercely.
Since 1945 we have been doing the opposite.
The Aircraft Carrier isn’t dead, their role will or has already significantly changed.
China is building Aircraft Carries as well, they already have 2-3 with more under construction.
Against a foe like China perhaps the Aircraft Carrier is dead, but against lesser nations the idea of having a Carrier Battle Group off your shore is unnerving.
The Carrier Battle group will be used against lesser powers that have no ability to defend themselves from attack by a carrier.
Hypersonic systems have made carrier battle groups obsolete. There is no AD. TThis this thread if full of blind cope.
No, I am not afraid of invasion but I am deathly afraid of the fear of invasion.
As the isolationists in America render us more and more vulnerable, as we are more and more encircled and threatened with invasion, both conventional or nuclear, the left in America will sell fear of invasion and gain power.
No, the Chinese will not conquer America by storming the beach at San Diego, they will not have to because the left will exploit our fears that have grown as we are isolated and threatened. The left will take political power and then they will simply open the gates and let the barbarians in.
Isolationism is the sure path to tyranny.
Nuclear powered lasers hooked up to the reactors?
We will need drone carriers.
I don’t disagree wrt to minor powers. Against a peer competitor however....one that has satellites, hypersonic missiles, AI guided drone swarms - not to mention submarines - they are vulnerable.
Nope. Sharks with frikin' laser beams attached to their heads.
The reason that the US Navy evolved into a force projection configuration is because until 2010 the United States was importing the majority of the oil it was consuming. Those tankers required escort.
The Permian guys say those days are returning. But ships that escort don’t need to be ships that project power to attempt to compel other country behavior into the form desired by ours. Those are not equivalent missions.
Isolationism is not the same thing as minding one’s own business. In the days to come, our business will be securing oil supply. That does not require forcing behavior.
At least, not at first.
Some on this thread assert the aircraft carriers have been demoted to the role of the battleship but in reality the aircraft carriers are fit only for the role of a 19th-century gunboat that can intimidate native populations incapable of defending with modern technology.
Our $13 billion carrier is a threat, not to China where it counts, but to 3rd or 4th class countries where we dare draw close.
As to the technology of a carrier evading an incoming hypersonic missile by diverting and turning in 20 seconds while it makes forward progress of about its own length, the odds are such that we don't dare court the risk. At that point, the carrier loses the point of its existence.
The risk has changed, so the whole game has changed.
“As the isolationists in America render us more and more vulnerable...”
Will you give us just one example of isolationists rendering us more and more vulnerable?
Who are the isolationists that are in charge?
The silicon chip has made naval surface combatants, land armored vehicles and most piloted warplanes obsolete death traps.
I lived on 3 of them over a period of 21 years, not crazy about moving back in.
