Respectfully, IMHO EV's are best if long commutes are involved. Unless, of course, "long commute" means more than 250 miles round trip (driving 80mph call it 200 mile limit). If an EV is used just for short commutes, then the gas savings isn't worth the extra costs that come with an EV. But for long commutes (again, long but short enough that you always comfortably make it home without charging on the road), an EV's gas savings can be more than worth the extra costs.
But the problem with long road trips you pointed out is real. Even if one gets an EV for the gas savings of doing a lot of local driving, don't get an EV as an only car (because of the trips charging problem). And even then, don't get an EV if it's your newer, more comfortable car (and thus the one you'd rather take on most trips) unless you do your research and make sure there are plenty of fast chargers on most of the trips you take. That works for us.
Last year in August I drove a straight shot from New Brunswick, Canada to my home in Alabama, which is 1,740 miles, and all but two of my charging stops were 10-15 minutes. (Keep in mind that while charging I can walk away from the EV to do my restroom break, unlike the 5 or so minutes of filling up my gas pickup, which then has another 5 minutes AFTER that to do my restroom break.) One of those two slow charging stops was a slow charger (about 30 minutes). The other one was a fast charger, but I waited long enough to charge all they way to 100% (when charging past about 82% the charging speed slows way down) while I was walked away eating anyway. So the end result is it took 32.5 hours of driving, charging, restroom breaks, and eating (only one meal was a stop because most meals were done while driving) to drive those 1,740 miles (not counting a 10 hour hotel stop plus a 30 minute stop to do my work on my laptop, count those and it was 43 hours from the time I left my family's driveway to arrive at my driveway).
But that involved avoiding the "free" charging stops (you get what you pay for, slow charging, waiting in line, if they have a restroom they're not clean, etc.). And it involved doing my homework and making sure there were plenty of fast charging options on that long trip. If I was to drive a similar long distance through sparsely populated areas (sparsely populated meaning less of everything, including fast chargers), I'd probably take the gas pickup. And if most of my trips were through areas like that, I wouldn't get the EV to begin with (because it's the newer, more comfortable car for doing long trips I'd rather have a newer gas car than a new EV when it was time to replace my wife's old gas crossover 3 years ago).
So EV's are like everything else. It's all about studying your particular use case scenario to see if it's best for you. And it's also about not depending on the govt's help (i.e. "free" charging).
We were looking at getting a small EV for trips around town - and the gas powered car for longer trips, which we take often, to visit relatives and grandchildren who live all over the state (California). Unfortunately, my husband died before we could buy the EV. I ended up selling all the cars and buying a new hybrid that is very comfortable (I have arthritis so comfort for these trips is crucial).
Recently, my son and I were sitting at one of our favorite restaurants along the way, getting ready to go - when we noticed the entire line of EV charges had been broken and were “out of order” - according to the business, thieves were taking out the copper!
As of right now, the type of driving I do the gas powered hybrid fits my needs. I only have one neighbor with an EV, a Tesla, the rest have gas powered cars.
