My Dad was, too. You and I might not be here today if they had gone through with it.

Thank you Harry Truman.

My dad too. He was in the Army Air Corps in Europe. When Germany surrendered, he was offered $10,000 to re-enlist for some sort of special assignment — probably having to do with Japan, but he was never given any details. The bomb ended everything before an invasion was needed.

Mine too. Instead, he was in the occupation force as a guard in a POW camp. If we had invaded, Japan would have been destroyed, and my guess would still be recovering.

My father was on a minesweeper that was going to be sweeping mines out of Tokyo harbor. He said that, had the bombs not been dropped, he would not have made it back alive.

My Marine Dad was on a troop ship in the Pacific when we dropped the big one. Said everybody was cheering, figuring surrender was imminent.

I’m blessed he wasn’t scarred by his participation in the war, often recalling his service with nostalgia. A good tempered, nice guy and a great father.

My dad commanded an LCT on Utah Beach. Later, he was XO on an LST, headed for the Pacific to prepare for the invasion of Japan.

They were somewhere around the Panama Canal when the war ended.
