I don’t believe that. The patriot cause was favored by a large majority. Remember how easily the royal governors were gotten rid of, and how few Tories actually turned out to fight for the British. The vast majority of militiamen turned out were patriots. The FFs were astutes statesmen. They would never have dared fighting the world’s greatest military power with so little popular support.
