Just becaue they can live for
a centuary, doesn’t mean that
those alive and succeptable to
hunt are a hundred years old.
When one subsistance hunts,
none are taken more than what
is required to sustain a thriving
human population. Children are
fed, and elders that can no longer
push through the physical
demands are cared for. Been
this way for hundreds of years.
And, guess what? There’s still
enough of those whales alive
to feed that population.
It’s in their blood to perpetuate
their survival. Natives know
not to eliminate a long standing
food source. Just as the buffalo
of the great plains. It wasn’t
the indians (natives) that wiped
them out.

Both the bison and whales were nearly sent into extinction by hunters of European ancestry overhunting-same as a lot of other species. We all know better than to do that now. There are still people in parts of the USA and Canada who live a subsistence lifestyle-or close to it-by choice. They are not all Native Americans, either.

Native Americans in Alaska are famous for being on lifelong public assistance-including an EBT card- as their primary source of income-any business they have, any hunting they do is not a primary income source in most cases. They can go to the grocery store just like any non-Native American Alaskan resident to get food-no need to hunt a protected animal no one else can hunt. That is what I was pointing out.

I grew up in a remote area and live in a rural area-I’m well acquainted with living off grid and self sufficient-also have hunted since I was a child-but I go to the grocery store for food, even in hunting season. As a naturalist, I am working toward being as close to a self sustaining lifestyle as possible/going Galt-but I won’t be hunting any endangered/protected animals, no matter how delicious they look...

My 1st husband was raised a ranch in New Mexico-we spent many happy months living on/caring for his uncle’s off grid ranch while the uncle was working for an oil co overseas. After we returned to Texas to live we made trips to see his family, go ski and stay at the Inn of The Mountain Gods at Ruidoso, etc every Winter-good times...
