My dad had a tin can of whale oil leather preservative that he purchased back in the 60s to keep up his pole climbing boots. It smelled like a petroleum product. I had that can around for years, I think my brother-in-law has it now.

Whale oil was a component of limited slip differentials in vehicles (GM) until it was banned. It took years to engineer a replacement as good.
