1500 hours just to get the ATP certificate. AFTER that is training in the particular aircraft which they are assigned to IF they want to go to the airlines. Not a short period by any means!

My cousin's husband (nice guy and very conservative) has been flying cargo planes and executive aircraft for most of the last 20 years. Zero accidents or even incidents.

Commercial airlines will NOT hire him because (they say) he has no experience flying commercial aircraft. The real reason (we suspect) is his color and gender. He understands that someone who flew for the US Navy or Air Force is going to beat him out for an opening since he lacks a military background.
