My experience is these guys pick up a lot of baggage along the way. Lots of survivor guilt and guilt about what they have done. Not all adjust well to civilian life, but the vast majority do. The last four years have been very hard on them, considering the Biden administration.
They tend to be very intelligent as well.

Nope. They check for that when you enter military, they check harder when you go SF, they check even harder when you get a clearance, and they check harder when you get a high one with read-ons.
