Keir Starmer really doesn’t want to end up like Joe Biden.
After a bumpy five months in office, the U.K.’s center-left prime minister will use a major speech on Thursday to shift focus from the abstract goal of boosting U.K. economic growth to the more tangible target of making voters feel better off.
In doing so, his administration has one eye on the fate of the U.S. president, who could boast enviable GDP figures — but still faced the wrath of voters, pinched by high inflation, who instead backed the return of Donald Trump.
In his speech, Starmer will promise to hit six numerical milestones by the next election covering health care, house construction, education, policing, net zero and the economy.
Downing Street insists the attempt to refocus Starmer’s premiership is not a “reset” — even though his polling has plummeted dramatically.

You can be incompetent as long as you're arrogant.
Like le Boris!
Yeah center-left like Karl Marx.
Anything lightly to the right of Lenin is considered “far right” in Britain.
What macro economists rarely mention is that the total economy is a collection of sectors, industries, and firms. Economic performance may be good as to the bottom line output numbers but still be politically damaging because too many people are not doing well.
Too late
Truss was more like Britain’s Trump.
She was not ‘spat out’ by voters. She was thrown out by the Parliamentary party (the MPs in her party). This was in spite of the Conservative grassroots party members voting to put her in power.
When the Bank of England revolted over her tax and spend plans (even though Labour has done worse) the Grandees used that as an excuse to oust her.
Unfortunately, unlike the US Republican Party, the Conservative party has much stronger establishment internal mechanisms to reject any leader that is viewed as too much of a maverick.
That is why ReformUK at this point is the only option. The Tories will never produce (or retain) a leader like Trump.
