I've seen an analysis of this hypothetical change going back to presidential elections in the 1980s, and the end result was interesting:
1. No presidential election would have had a different result if every state allocated its EVs the way Maine and Nebraska do.
2. In every election, the net change in red vs. blue gains and losses in electoral votes was almost a wash -- and was in single digits at the most. The EVs that the GOP candidate would lose in Texas and Florida (for example) are offset by the ones he gains in California and New York.
