I once asked a British acquaintance whether they were commemorating the fact that the plot to blow up the King and Parliament failed, or celebrating that someone tried. They seemed confused by the question. But as an American I could see either way.

I need to look up what happened on Guy Fawkes night in Boston in 1774. IIRC, Sam Adams convinced the two competing factions who usually fought each other to rally together and vent their wrath on the Tories.

And here we are, 250 years later. OMG
