I make it clear to friends and family that I am a staunch conservative who worships the ground Trump walks on. And that there is almost nothing that they believe that I believe. And with that statement, I add that I love them dearly and that I will continue to love them regardless of their beliefs or their votes. And that I will NEVER hear a single negative word about Trump. In return, I will not argue with them over their beliefs. With those topics off the table, we’ll stay with the ones that hold us together.
So far that has worked perfectly. Trump is a sacred subject for me and I ignore the idiocies in their articles of faith. I’ve kept every friend and family member because we hold to the red lines of conversation.
I know some liberals and have some in my family where we don’t talk about it much. And I don’t see it so much as they don’t believe the same things I believe - they just see the solutions the wrong way.
I happened to watch an old “Ted Talk” by JD Vance and he spoke about growing up poor and the opportunities that he had. Lots of facts and figures, and some rough ideas on solving the problems. Homegrown solutions such as education, mentors, etc.
He didn’t mention it, but I thought those are the same problems that the leftists say they are concerned about - but their solution just involves tossing more money at the poor and making them more dependent on government which gives the government more power. Which is the leftists’ REAL goal.
Of course my liberal friends and relatives don’t see that.
