The Jews did not have to pretend to convert. Just being Jewish was enough. The muzzlimes killed thousands of Jews during the "Golden Age" and more afterward. Then the christians drove out the muzzlime Moors and for a time, Judaism was accepted. Great scholars of Jewish texts and famous medical doctors arose in the Jewish community. But by the 1200s, things started to deteriorate and by the 1300s, thousands of Jews were massacred and tortured. According to one historical text, "Jews were forbidden to practice medicine; forbidden to sell bread, wine, flour, or meat; prohibited from engaging in handicraft or any form of trade; forbidden to hold public office or act as a money-broker; prohibited from carrying arms or hire Christian servants or give presents or visit Christians; forbidden to trim their beards or cut their hair. Finally, they were also absolutely forbidden to leave the country and seek an end to their plight." Yeah, that would definitely win me over. Not a chance.

Their scheme to force conversion backfired on Spain, however, Their finances were ruined, as were commerce and industry, as Jews fled from the hostile environment.

The Inquisition started in 1492 and lasted actually for 400 years. The edict of expulsion was only repealed in 1968! Jews were allowed to live in Spain but not practice Judaism. There are still communities in Spain which, upon drinking certain alcoholic beverages, say "Kill the Jew" instead of "Cheers". That's how embedded the antisemitism was. It was 2015 until Jews were allowed to apply for full citizenship.

So the torture and death of Jews was pervasive, lasted centuries and not limited to those pretending to convert. You will never catch me in Spain, that's for sure!

You’re arguing with the brainwashed.

Aside from persecution of faithful Jews, Jews who caved to the pressure and threats were routinely persecuted as “fake Nazarenes.”

The Inquisition operated pretty much like today’s DOJ. If you were on the “right side” of the powerful, you were fine. If someone didn’t like you or you were in the way, suddenly you were “a secret Jew” and they’d take all your property.

Indeed, the entire thing started because various nobles didn’t want to pay their debts. Jews had their property confiscated, including debts owed to them. Voila! The crown owed no money.

So were the Jews “absolutely forbidden to leave the country”? Or were they forcibly expelled? Both are offered as complaints. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain is well documented. The notion that they were forbidden to leave is less so. What’s the source on that?

After the death of King John in 1390, various persecuting laws directed toward Jews were enacted. According to one source, "Synagogues were destroyed, and tens of thousands of Jews were murdered. On June 6, the mob attacked the Juderia in Seville from all sides and murdered 4,000 Jews. Many Jews chose to convert to Christianity as the only way to escape death." Further, "laws were passed...Jews were forbidden to practice medicine; forbidden to sell bread, wine, flour, or meat; prohibited from engaging in handicraft or any form of trade; forbidden to hold public office or act as a money-broker; prohibited from carrying arms or hire Christian servants or give presents or visit Christians; forbidden to trim their beards or cut their hair. Finally, they were also absolutely forbidden to leave the country and seek an end to their plight.
