Fire marshal: Grease accumulation sparked Wolf Lodge blaze (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho)

The Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office said Thursday that grease accumulation was the cause of the Labor Day fire that destroyed the iconic Wolf Lodge Steakhouse.

"It was determined that a breach in the flue pipe above the kitchen’s wood-fired grill allowed an accumulation of grease to form on the flue piping and inside the attic. This build-up of grease ignited and spread to the remainder of the building," a press release said. "The fire was classified as accidental."

Jason Blubaum, state deputy fire marshal, was one of the investigators of the scene the day after the blaze.

(nothing left of the Wolf Lodge but ashes).

In better days...

Sorry to hear that you had a trip planned to Wolf Lodge. We ate there a few times, usually on special occasions, and always enjoyed it.

“...the kitchen’s wood-fired grill allowed an accumulation of grease to form”

No, neglect and lack of maintenance allowed the grease to build up.

I believe the old Wolf Creek Steakhouse in Spokane (closed) was a sister location to this.

Big loss around here. I hope they rebuild but they can’t recapture the charm of the place.

Did the marriage outlast the restaurant?

A great place with incredible atmosphere. Rocky Mountain Oysters too! As locals we only went there during the off season. It seems everyone in the area has eaten there at least once.

I have seen grease buildup in the cooking hood so bad that it probably did not matter if it had a fire suppression system or not.

Code requires a hood inspection twice a year. Assuming that the system was inspected, the tech failed miserably to not notice that the flue had a breach and I can’t imagine that there wasn’t grease dripping out of the ceiling, which should have alerted whoever was doing building maintenance or the company that should have been hired to clean the hood.

There was a lot of fail on multiple parties that led to this.

I’d never heard of “Kitchen Nightmares” — just started watching an episode about a pizzeria in Denver. Good show!

The restaurants that are in the worst shape always have an owner who is either in denial about how bad things have gotten, or who seems to see their restaurant as only their personal stage to ham it up out in the dining room with the guests, or both. It’s amazing how often people like that resist and even argue with Ramsey about the changes he wants to make, when they’re being offered a free makeover for the source of their livelihood, and “doing it their way” has their business on the verge of bankruptcy. You wonder why they agreed to do the show, when they won’t let him change anything.

I question the inspection departments based on that show and what I have seen inside the kitchens, and especially since this mass immigration and seeing their kitchens.

Much of what we see on that show could not be happening if inspections were actually being performed and authentic.
