Bernie Sanders (of all people) had it right back in the day. Waves of illegal immigrants *reduce* opportunities for everyone. It’s not the year 1900 anymore. There are no longer thousands of factory jobs waiting to be filled.

the rumor that Trump said not to vote for the bill as it would mess with his election was started by Chris Coons: ... who said that he was talking to a lot of GOP senators in recent days who said that they were getting phone calls from Donald Trump saying that, why are you doing — why are you trying to help Joe Biden? I need this issue to get elected.

In short, the bill would have allowed illegals to roam free in the US (ostensibly by wearing ankle bracelets or 'phone in's'). It would also transfer authority from immigration judges to 4300 new 'asylum officers' within DHS and allow claimants to work immediately upon release. (The cost of hiring of staff to properly vet, track and process was not estimated in the bill nor was the costs of rounding up rejected claimants and deporting them).

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise posted, "It accepts 5,000 illegal immigrants a day and gives automatic work permits to asylum recipients — a magnet for more illegal immigration," "

The Democrats' also had objections to the bill in that it would require the entire asylum process to run its course in 180 days, it would limit the opportunity for claimants to obtain lawyers and it would provide no protection for undocumented Dreamers at the expense of increased entry for Afghans, Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans. To claim the bill was killed only because Trump objected is patently dishonest.
