Thanks. I remember reading it almost real time, I was totally enthralled with it.
“Stolen Valor Marine” Dan Rather co-opted a “Proof Photo” of himself in Dress Blues before he received an Entry Level Separation (serving less than 180 days) from MCRD San Diego, CA.
He was unable to do the regular fitness regimen AND didn’t disclose to his Recruiter that he had rheumatic fever as a child.
I served as the Logistics Officer (Special Staff - 4) at the Recruit Training Regiment, MCRD Parris Island, SC from ‘92 - ‘96. It was customary for Recruit’s Photos to be taken well in advance of Graduation so they could have them ready to send them home to Mom and Dad upon leaving MCRD.
Rather somehow got hold of the “Proof” and put it in his Autobiography. If that is not Stolen Valor, I don’t know what is.
If only Dan had known Bush was actually a Democrat, he wouldn’t have had to bother with all this.
Describes the propaganda media.
Me too! Watched this happen in real time.
Bush turned the other cheek and voted for Hillary a decade later. Maybe all those attacks on him were wink-wink.
I had originally signed up not long after 9/11 (boy do I remember THOSE threads and photos!), but somehow My original screen name and password stopped working- I don’t know why.but It wasn’t til a few years ago I managed to re-sign in with a different screen name and password.
I watched it happen right here.
Documents from 1972 created in Microsoft .
LOL
Bill Gates was 17 in September 1972.
The fact he stayed on the CBS payroll after committing forgery was the giveaway that CBS executives were behind the fraud.
The uni-party figured out that they could put on a show of "choice" between parties as long as they keep those pesky real conservatives out of the race.
Bush vs Gore, Bush vs Kerry, McCain vs Obama and Romney vs Obama were just shows for our entertainment.
A forged document implies the existence of a real original document. The document produced by Rather and CBS was fabricated! There was no original!
During a tour of the FBI headquarters in D.C. in the early 60’s, I remember the agent telling us the FBI has every typewriter and font ever made so they could trace any typewritten document to its source. CBS never produced the original typewritten document!
As pointed out here, it was a FREEPER showed that the document was produced on a Word type document.
Fabricated!! not forged.
I think of a couple of things concerning Rathergate. Firstly, I remember reading in Bernard Goldberg’s book Bias (in my personal library) about The Dan. There was a “vice president in charge of Dan Rather” who made sure everything to do with Rather’s appearances to his specially tailored suits were perfect and up to Dan’s exacting standards. No one was to ever question The Dan and Goldberg got to see The Dan’s bullying up close and personal when he, Goldberg, first came out an op-ed discussing concerns about alleged liberal bias in so called mainstream news media outlet reporting.
Also that I read a feature in National Review (when I subscribed) at the time in which it discussed the efforts of someone in Texas who long worked against the media and it’s falsehoods about Vietnam and veterans and the attention he brought to the Docugate scandal was his crowning touch. This person first started this work in 1975 when he saw a Dallas news outlet, when reporting an armed robbery, stated that a Vietnam veteran was the perpetrator. The truth was that the perp had only been in Army basic training in about 1972 and left shortly afterwards and thus saw no action at all, let alone be in Vietnam.
I thought it was Gerbilist.
What’s most important to remember is that Rathergate would never have happened without an unfettered internet for political commentary (most particularly FR at that time), which is now under attack throughout the world, from the shutdown of X in Brazil, to rumblings of political censorship of “wrong think” in Britain, Canada and the EU.
I remember reading it in real time. We were on vacation and I followed it on a pay-for-Interent computer in the front office of the Kings Inn San Diego. I was chucking quarters into that thing as if it were a Las Vegas slot machine.
...and failed to faithfully expose the origin of the documents. All that mattered was the result.
And look what we got...
I'd trade horseface for zero in a heartbeat.
I had been lurking for some time back then. When Rathergate occurred, I decided to jump on board as Bushbacker1. Since I finally got disgusted with all things Bush I changed to current nom de plume.
I followed that thread that night, and it was unbelievably exciting watching the truth come out in real time. Here’s another small indication of the spirit of that thread, in another comment from “Buckhead”:
“To: TheGeezer
“Well, thanks, but it’s premature. It’s not 100% conclusive because the IBM Executive and IBM Selectric Composer would do proportional fonts. The Composer was almost certainly not used in this case - it was for typesetting for camera ready and was a monumental pain in the rear to use. The Executive is possible, but still not very likely, but that doesn’t resolve the other circumstances indicating forgery. As this gets sifted through the day we will eventually come to find out the truth. There’s thousands of people working on it now. It’s pretty cool how its unfolded.

The salient point here: note the contrast between the MSM, then as now (and even more so now) focusing on pushing an agenda, and “thousands” of free-lance nobodies on their laptops focusing on pursuing something the MSM had abandoned: *The Truth*. Even Buckhead himself was considering factors that might contradict his original hypothesis, while innumerable other posters were busily digging deeper into the whole matter.
