Years ago our family did a road trip out east. NJ Revolutionary war sites, Valley Forge, Philly, then D.C. Walking past the block long USDA building (4? stories tall) and getting to the sign our front I stopped the kids.

“Do you think George Washington, or the founding fathers at Philadelphia, ever imagined that our government would have such a massive building, and tens of thousands of government workers - just to tell farmers how to farm?”

They used to say about the USDA— every farmer had his own private agent. And the most profitable square foot he owns was the bottom of his mailbox (where government checks would land.)
