It’s not the tail number (aircraft registration)change that is puzzling. It’s the serial number change, like the VIN number on your car.

From Brave AI:
Serial Number Modifiability in Aircraft
Based on the provided search results, aircraft serial numbers do not change throughout the lifecycle of an aircraft. The serial number is assigned by the manufacturer at the time of production and remains consistent, regardless of changes in ownership, registration, or operator.
The search results emphasize that the serial number is a unique identifier assigned by the manufacturer and is not altered or reassigned to another aircraft. This is supported by statements such as:
“However, the serial number of an aircraft issued by the manufacturer at time of production never changes throughout the lifecycle of the aircraft.”
“The serial number remains consistent throughout the life of the aircraft, regardless if there’s a change of operator and/or registration.”
“The complete aircraft serial number assigned to the aircraft by the manufacturer. Always displayed and cannot be deselected.”
The only exceptions mentioned are:
Military aircraft, which may not conform to their countries’ ICAO-issued civil registration format and may or may not change their tail numbers.
Reuse of tail numbers: If a plane is removed from the registration database due to changes, destruction, or export, the number could be reassigned to a different aircraft.
In summary, the serial number assigned by the manufacturer remains unchanged throughout an aircraft’s lifecycle, except for potential reuse in rare circumstances involving removal from registration databases.
Have they attached a long rope to the back of the plane yet?
It’s a flying cigar tube..................
Interesting and still puzzling.
Thanks.
