absurd premise??

We'll have the capability to create, at least visually and audibly, a holographic "Vic Fontaine" that can think on his own pretty soon now. Physical reality (being able to touch or be touched by "Vic"), or have him materialize or dematerialize right in front of you, yeah, that's further off...

Holodecks not only produced animated images like holograms but gave them material form. There is no manipulation of physics that I know of that can do that. Even more than transporters, holodecks were a way on Star Trek to facilitate story telling, not projections of plausible scientific advances.

The premise is absurd only insofar as the existence of such "holosuites" would rock the foundations of our society far more than portrayed in the series.

The series actually downplayed the effect they would have on human society.

James Darren was a class act.
