You didn't hear about them because information wasn't available at the touch of a fingertip.. especially sensationalized/clickbaity information.Same thing with a lot of other sociological phenomena.
In my entire high school, for example, there were absolutely no gays. (Well, except for that one nun with the noticeable moustache we always had our doubts about.)
Today? Nothin' but gays!
