This is important when it comes to Walz’s rank. According to online info: “Sergeant major is a “courtesy title” for the senior master sergeant in a battalion/squadron or higher headquarters, who takes an administrative role.

So Walz’s title was a “courtesy” title, not really earned, but handed out to him like “Honorary Doctorates” are handed out all the time. To me, “administrative role” means desk duty.
