I’m not an aviation engineer, but my recollection is that planes optimized for a subsonic speed have thicker wings than those that run supersonic. When a plane designed for speeds under the sound barrier approach the sound barrier a pulsating pressure wave (called compressibility) builds up on the wing and eventually tears it off.
