I did the same thing. Needed history electives and chose to study Russian and German history. Very enlightening to see how our world was shaped during the cold war.

In my family history, my greatn grandparents and other family members, fled western Russia after the first 1903 revolution. They settled in Scandinavia. Eventually went to Iceland, then to Canada. One of the people who made it to Canada decided to go back to Russia and was killed in the 1917 revolution. Interesting stuff. Probably why I took those history classes.
