My impression of Vance is that he is an academic and intellectual who entered politics at a young age. His selection as the VP candidate could be viewed as addressing a gap in the Trump team.
“had a number of much better choices available”
Name one.
Of the 5 top names bandied about by the media, I don’t think any of them were any better, they all had major weaknesses.
Trump sees something in Vance, I’ll go with his choice.
>> I respect Hinderaker and his take on this is concerning. What do you all think?
I frequent PowerLine Blog. I have a great deal of respect and alignment with Steve Hayward and Lloyd Billingsly. Johnson and Hinderaker, not so much, but they’re ok on most subjects.
Not all that long ago Hinderaker was a devout NeverTrumper, but as Trump ran away with the nomination he changed his tune; he’s not stupid. But like some former NeverTrumpers here on FR, although he has grudgingly switched over to backing Trump, he never misses an opportunity to second-guess everything Trump does.
In his July 9th piece (https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2024/07/trumps-vp-who-will-it-be.php) Hinderaker gives his take on who he thinks President Trump will pick for veep, and of course he also weighs in on who it *should* be in his opinion. I don’t agree with his preferences, but he supports his position and it’s neither vacuous nor impulsive.
Bottom line, to me Hinderaker is more of an asset than a liablity to the conservative cause.
And his wife is Indian (dot, not feather). Trump is bringing in people who have never been with us. No matter what the scribbler thinks, JD is the choice. Time to get on the team, sack up, and go in for the big win.
Enough sniveling.
39 is not young, and he's been a national-level political figure for 8 years. His objections to Trump are many years in the past and show he is intelligently capable of changing his mind rather than doubling down mindlessly on his prejudices. So these are not serious objections Hinderaker is making. What's really up?
Now I need to replace my Trump yard sign with a Trump/Vance yard sign.
I think Powerline never fails to disappoint.
Think rationally: Rubio? the consummate RINO.
Scott, the man who was given opportunity zones, a tremendous opportunity for him as a politician, was treated with respect and damned Trump by standing aloof at every controversy, often sticking in the knife.
Bergum, a RINO worth 100M who brings nothing to the table and will alienate the base like OZ did.
Youngkin, praised by Rove & McCarthy and very popular among democrats.
Ben Carson, a very good man, honorable but low energy and not up to the task. The rest aren’t worth dissecting.
Vance is honest, willing to own up to mistakes, strong moral code, compelling life story, position statements are excellent and mesh perfectly with Trump’s MAGA platform. Very bright, quick on his feet, forthright, young and vigorous. An excellent complement to Trump.
If he performs well he can run as President and serve two terms. If heavens forbid there is an emergency he can step in with vigor and carry on..
Warmongers routinely trash Americans who refuse to go along with their warmongering, but it really falls flat with Vance. He's a Marine, with all that implies. Maybe he's just sick and tired of the fact that men and women in US uniform have been serving as thugs for the Capitol District elites and their special interests, rather than defending America.
” He attacks the Iraq war in a manner barely distinguishable from leftists, and his statement that “I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another,” is flippant at best.”
He was IN Iraq as a Marine, moron. What war were you in Hinderacker? With all your expertise you must have been in one, right?
There were a few on the board who would’ve been bad choices. Vance was not one of them. Just my two cents.
The #1 job of a VP is to be a deterrent to taking out the POTUS. This is the reason Agnew was Nixon’s VP, as Agnew truly frightened the left. So they had to take him out first before even considering impeachment.
It also works internationally. So does the idea of
J. D. Vance as POTUS scare the ruthless tin pot dictators around the world? How about Democrats and the media? If he does that he is a good choice.
I don't know much about Vance either but the more I learn about him, the more I like him.
I do know this. Trump's VP pick could've been much, much worse. I'm pleasantly surprised he didn't go straight swamp. He didn't pick Lindsey Graham or Nikki Haley. He didn't pick a "checks the right box" DEI hire. He picked a young, white guy who, from what I've learned, is pretty based.
So he's only been a senator for a short time? So what? Obama was a first-term senator as well and he went on to serve two terms, radically shifting the Democrat Party leftward, expanding the deep state, and filling every unelected bureaucratic position in Washington with partisan Kommissars, --many of whom still hold their jobs! We didn't like it but to the Marxist left, "inexperienced" Obama was a great success!
So, I guess this makes him vote for Biden now?
This guy probably wanted Haley.
At least one person agrees with me.

Pence the traitor had more experience and we know how that worked out. Pence was in politics long enough to be owned and compromised.
Vance’s credentials are he’s a solid conservative that won’t betray his running mate. Unlike the former.
Someone who believes as this ahole does that America should be military intervening around the world while bankrupt is not a conservative, rather, a NeoCon, totally different.
And one far more likely to carry on and build upon the legacy of Donald Trump than George H.W. Bush ever did after Ronaldus Magnus. Talk about your squandered opportunities.
I think Trump thought it over very carefully.
I don’t know what Trump is planning exactly, but assume Vance will play a role.
I’m in.
Conservative Inc. Is big mad. PERFECT CHOICE.
