The problem here is that we've elected Mike DeWine and John Kasich as the last two governors. So, establishment Republicans do very well.

And, the other problem is that if Vance ends up as VP and Sherrod Brown loses in November, Brown might run for Vance's seat. And, with Trump in the White House, Democrats would be energized.
