It was pretty extensive.
There were probably a lot more that were snuck in in other programs or methods too.
I think the rationale was that the Russians would get them if we don’t.
There were also a lot of German POWs that were brought to the States (believe it or not) rather than enamped in Europe, and there were programs to use many of them for labor, particularly if they had specific skills. When I heard about that, I wondered how many of them were given paths to stay after the war, or would have elected to.

In the southwest corner of South Dakota there was a army munitions factory and storage.
The Black Hills ordinance depot.
The Army had many Italians working in the storage of munitions.
They had the run of the place and many would walk to near by towns.
The depot had igloo shaped concrete bunkers.
An Italian became despondent and pulled the pin on a grenade in a bunker full of munitions.
Scattered the bunker.
On a further note...the German POWs were housed in Ft.Robinson Nebraska.
None of them wanted to escape.
The story goes the Germans would be loaded into the back of a truck and the US guard would hand up his rifle and then the Germans would help him into the truck

I grew up in Clewiston, FL.
There was a German POW camp out by Harlem and near the “airport.”
I wonder if it’s not a museum now?
The camp was in the Everglades adjacent to Harlem. The Germans never tried to escape.
