The leader of the “Unite the Right” group at Charlottesville, which no one had ever heard of before, had a history of being an Obama supporter. So clearly gaslighting, but I don’t know how much the FBI might have been involved in that incident.

At #19 by mac_truck .. the Stanford mapping group at #191 says the Patriot Front grew out of Charlottesville: Here's their blurb:

Patriot Front is a Texas-based white supremacist group founded by Thomas Ryan Rousseau. The group formed as an offshoot of Vanguard America (VA) in the wake of the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017. The group espouses racist, anti-Semitic, and xenophobic ideologies and has the primary goal of establishing a white ethnostate within the United States.[3] Patriot Front masks such ideologies under the guise of patriotism and explicitly avoids using traditional “antisemitic and white supremacist language and symbols.”[4] The group is highly active; it is estimated that PF members have been responsible for more than 80 percent of the white supremacist propaganda distribution activities in the United States since 2020.[5]
