Not exactly meaningless. The announced event may not reveal who the candidate is, but it will reveal who he or she isn’t. No Tulsi at the event? No Marco? Then you can scratch them from the list.

I don’t think Trump would box himself in like that. Unless he makes a definitive announcement that someone is out, everyone is in, until he makes an official announcement. A mere absence from an event wouldn’t scratch someone off the list. There’s a thousand reasons a prospect wouldn’t be at this event. IMHO.
