Companies are as subject to fashion and fads as teenage girls. Suddenly Quality Circles were all the rage and every company had them, even if they completely ignored them and their outputs. We went from single person cubicles to two people to four people to something resembling a pole with four computers and four high stools where you were supposed to “perch” all day. Seriously. That prompted such a revolt from the engineering staff, they backed out of that one. It was derived from the phone sales business. (There’s no way a fifty-something is going to perch on a bar stool and work all day. I’d have quit and fortunately enough of the top engineers who essentially “were” the company said they’d quit also.) So, I guess the guy who cuts my lawn is now part of my “team.”
