Most people would not believe that I had a great grandfather who fought in the Civil War but that's true too.

Me too. Great-granddad was one of four brothers, older ones CSA, younger ones USA (he was one of the youngers). Had grandma when he was in his fifties, she had Dad when she was in her late forties (his oldest brother was 16yo when Dad was born), Dad was 30 when I was born, and I'm 70.

A civil war widow died recently. Young teenager married him during the depression-1930’s. She was poor and he was old.

I had one great-grandfather who was old enough to serve in the US Civil War (born in 1835) but he lived in Europe. That great-grandfather's father was born in 1780--his last grandchild died in 1981. Not quite as long a span as John Tyler (b. 1790) having a living grandson today.

A number of years ago I heard a talk by a man who was then 97 years old--his father had ridden with Nathan Bedford Forrest. His father was pretty old when he was born.

Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr., who was killed in the battle of Okinawa in June 1945, was the son of Simon Bolivar Buckner, Sr., who surrendered Fort Donelson to Ulysses Grant in 1862.
