The way it was written, news of the deputy’s death somehow led to the father taking his own life.

I agree. I think -way- more than a few slip through the cracks. Everyone imagines it’s treated like CSI and carefully studied. But that is just not the case. And the smaller the town, the more likely.
If there are no flashing red lights to make it suspicious, and no very unusual circumstances, they jump to a conclusion.
