OK, so this is a little in my wheel house. In my county, family law judges are on the first floor. Generally, when they appoint an associate or special judge, and that person has a family law background, they start them out in family law court. It is like the training ground to be a judge. If you have a criminal background, like an assistant district attorney, you may go to the 5th floor, where Preliminary Hearings, or Preliminary Hearing Conferences are held. And you may stay there a long time. District Judges, the one who actually hear criminal felony cases that go to trial, are generally someone has a verified background, long background in that area as a judge. There is generally a stair step procedure judges go through to get to that position. You would never, never, have a family law judge, who has only been a judge for three (3) years, be assigned the most famous and important criminal law case in the history of the nation. Its not done. This part may be the most alarming part of this whole deal. They picked him because they knew he would do their bidding.
