That’s the thing. He fully bought into the nice guy Lunch Bucket Joe schtick long ago. He came to believe his own pr because, before his dementia, his baseline was “stupid.” Thinks every lame witticism is uproariously funny because that’s all the feedback he’s ever gotten. Hence the “don’t jump” line. Making the sign of the cross at an abortion rally was meant to be funny
