The article talks about ballot images a lot but there is no mention of ballots.

Do the original ballots still exist?

Ballot images only exist for those counties that use particular scanning equipment.

Do the original ballots still exist?

Yes.

There never was a ballot to start with.   We were given a coded card with all of our identifying data on it.   The Poll worker would direct us to the next available video monitor.   We plugged the card into a slot below the video monitor and the ballot was presented on the screen.   We then made selections for a candidate or referendum item and at the end we were told to review our selections and if they were correct we were allowed to submit the electronic ballot.   At that point a printer below the monitor would print a "ballot."   We were then directed to take the paper "ballot" from the printer to a digital scanner where we put the "so called" ballot into the scanner.   The scanner kept the so called "ballot", and that was the end of voting.   We then returned the card that we were first given to another poll worker and received a "thank you for voting sticker."

What could go wrong with that?   /s

You should see that there was more than one opportunity to archive a ballot image.
