Good question. Plus the bridge looked like it wasn’t either a good design or built cheesely or both. At least upgraded for bigger ships of the day.

in the 70’s the largest ships were about 1/3 the size of todays largest ships

After the 1980 bridge collapse near Tampa, bridge supports everywhere should have had islands and other obstacles built around them to protect them from these events

Wanna to hear conspiracy theory # 77 ??

Bridge being built in 1977 it only allowed ‘small’ cruise ships to enter Baltimore harbor. Just like Tampa Bay and the skyway down there.

So in order to get mega-cruise chips into Baltimore they need a bigger bridge. So the cruise industry planned this whole take down. New bridge, higher and better than ever. Or even a tunnel will be the ‘fix’ the cruise companies need !!
