Project 10510 Leader Class, Rossiya

The RITM-400 reactor represents a significant evolutionary step from the RITM-200, which is used in current icebreakers under Project 22220, such as the Arktika, which began operations in October 2020.

With a thermal power increase of 315 MW, the RITM-400 is 1.8 times more powerful than its predecessor. This advance will enable the Rossiya and its sister ships to ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route and support Arctic expeditions, including those involving large-capacity vessels.

Installed power:
2 RITM-400 nuclear reactors (2 × 315 MWt);
Four turbogenerators (4 × 37 MWe)

Propulsion:
Nuclear-turbo-electric;
4 shafts (4 × 30 MW)

Speed: 24 knots (44 km/h; 28 mph)

Endurance: 8 months
Crew: 127

In March 2023, Kommersant reported that the construction of Rossiya's hull had progressed only by 5% instead of the planned 15% and the large steel castings such as rudder horns and propeller shaft brackets, originally ordered from the Ukrainian company Energomashspetsstal whose production facilities in Kramatorsk were damaged during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, had to be re-contracted to a domestic supplier who cannot deliver them to the shipyard before August 2025.

As a result of various delays and challenges, the cost of the first Project 10510 icebreaker is expected to increase by 40–60% and the delivery of the ship will slip beyond the December 2027 deadline.

In May 2024, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Denis Manturov, confirmed that the delivery has been postponed to 2030.

In December 2024, the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major, transporting two 45-ton hatches used to cover the nuclear reactors on Project 10510, sank in the western Mediterranean, causing a further delay in the ship's construction.

These ships usually include a movie theater, internet sauna, heated pool, and squash courts; their kitchens/mess halls rivals anything the US Navy has for quality and quality of food.

The US is incapable of building any heavy ice breaker that is in any way competitive, thanks to Congressional neglect and US Navy rivalry for funds.

It is highly unlikely to be built, even though they say they plan to allocate 90 billion rubbles in the 2025 budget. https://portnews.ru/news/368492/

It’s not just a lack of money that will stop the project.
