Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Coalitions created among the Ramstein Group nations go about their work of supplying the Ukrainian war effort:

Kyiv Independent Reports:

“Countries participating in the armored vehicles coalition for Ukraine, an initiative of Poland and Germany, met in Warsaw for the first time on March 26, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry announced.

Some of the countries involved in the coalition include the U.K., Italy, and Sweden.

During the meeting in Warsaw, participants “developed a consolidated position regarding the strengthening of the technical fleet of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with certain samples of armored vehicles,” Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported.

The participants also discussed organizing the system to repair the armored vehicles provided to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The repair of the vehicles is one of four focus areas of the coalition, along with the supply of weapons and ammunition for the vehicles, the training of crews and technical personnel, and developing effective tactics for using the vehicles on the battlefield.

“This is a very important initiative of our allies in view of the existing problems in the Armed Forces with the repair of foreign-type armored vehicles,” Deputy Defense Minister Ivan Havryliuk said.

“I hope that with the help of our allies we will be able to create an effective repair base for Western armored vehicles in Ukraine as quickly as possible,” Havryliuk said.

Other similar initiatives include an artillery coalition, a fighter jet coalition, or a demining coalition, organized within the framework of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), also known as the Ramstein format.”

Separately, they report:

“France (which heads the Artillery Coalition for Ukraine) will soon be able to supply Ukraine with 78 Caesar howitzers and has boosted its production of artillery rounds to meet Kyiv’s most urgent needs, the Associated Press (AP) reported on March 26, citing French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu.

In January, Lecornu presented a plan for Kyiv, Paris, and other allies to jointly finance 78 Caesar howitzers for Ukraine. Speaking at a news conference on March 26, the minister said that France, Ukraine, and Denmark reached an agreement that will enable Paris to “quickly deliver” the artillery systems.

Separately, France had already delivered 30 Caesar artillery systems to Ukraine as part of earlier deliveries.

According to the French minister, his country also plans to deliver 80,000 155 mm artillery shells to Ukraine in 2024, a considerable increase from 30,000 rounds last year.”

Curious where the Czech shells are, 80,000 isn’t even a months worth for Ukraine. If EU is shooting for 1 million shells that is close to 80000 per month. Where are they coming from if France is only producing 80000 a year?

In race to make artillery shells, US, EU see different results NOVEMBER 27, 2023
https://www.defenseone.com/business/2023/11/race-make-artillery-shells-us-eu-see-different-results/392288/

“In Europe
The countries of the European Union began with a head start, producing about 230,000 155mm shells a year—about one-third more than the U.S. The EU also has a better recent record for approving annual spending plans.
By February 2023, European production was at 300,000 rounds annually, according to Estonian defense officials. By November, capacity had risen again, though assessments differ. European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton suggested that Europe could now make some 400,000 rounds annually. Estonia’s Pevkur, speaking at a November media roundtable, put the figure between 600,000 and 700,000—and said it would reach one million rounds in 2024.”

United States
“Last March, Army Undersecretary Gabe Camarillo upped the target slightly, announcing plans to produce 24,000 rounds a month by year’s end.

The Army hit the target early, then exceeded it, producing 28,000 shells in October. At least some of those shells went right out the door to Ukraine, Army acquisition secretary Doug Bush told reporters in a media roundtable in November. He declined to say just how many.

Bush said the service now aims to boost its monthly production to 36,000 by March, 60,000 by September, 70,000 to 80,000 in early 2025, and 100,000 by the end of calendar 2025 — two and half times more than Wormuth’s year-old goal.”

“Congress, which has not yet agreed to fund the government past January, may not consider the bill until a longer funding resolution is passed. House Republicans, meanwhile, have become more and more leery of funding Ukraine,
Without that money, the Army will not meet its goal of producing 100,000 155mm rounds by the end of 2025, Bush said.”

The European Commission claims this “Thanks to measures already taken, European annual production capacity for 155 mm shells had already reached 1 million per year in January 2024.”

In this March 15,2024 release.
Today, the Commission allocated the €500 million foreseen under the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP). This will allow the European defence industry to ramp up its ammunition production capacity to 2 million shells per year by the end of 2025.

The Commission also launched the Work Programme for the instrument for the reinforcement of the European defence industry through common procurement (EDIRPA) and the fourth annual Work Programme of the European Defence Fund (EDF).

Together, these programmes have a budget of almost €2 billion. Today’s steps towards the reinforcement of the European defence technological and industrial base are taken in the wake of the adoption of the first ever European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS) and the associated proposal for a European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP).

Still don’t understand how the 80000 in 2024 from France fits into the EU artillery supply, is that above an beyond the 1 million/2 million rounds forecast?

Based on past usage, and realizing that aircraft dropped munitions could change that(western doctrine doesn’t depend on ground based artillery to such a large extent and IMO, was one of the reasons 155 production was so low), Ukraine needs between 150k and 300k rounds per month to deal effectively with human wave tactics.

Curious if air launched cluster munitions will be part of munitions package and if the aircraft can get close enough to deploy them.

Is there any kind of wing package for air launched cruise missiles to extend range?

I guess France is just part of the mix, a number of European countries and the UK make the 155 shells.

True perhaps he will have time to respond. The aircraft if properly supplied and protected could go along way towards making Russias life more difficult

Shell parity and aircraft should lead to a Ukrainian advantage, but if the aircraft are lost and the shells don’t arrive in time then that is a bad situation

...western doctrine doesn’t depend on ground based artillery to such a large extent and IMO, was one of the reasons 155 production was so low...

I agree...Combined Forces.

Also, western doctrine is accuracy is better than mass...Excalibur, HIMARs/GMLRS, GLSDBs, JDAMs, JSOWs, JASSMs, SDBs, just name a few.

Curious if air launched cluster munitions will be part of munitions package and if the aircraft can get close enough to deploy them.

To my knowledge, there are no long range (winged) CBUs. The aircraft would have to overfly the target.

Is there any kind of wing package for air launched cruise missiles to extend range?

IMHO, AGM-158B JASSM-ER is the answer.

“how the 80000 in 2024 from France fits into the EU artillery supply”?

The French production is included in the EU total numbers.

But the 800lb gorilla in the room, is the German company Rhinemetall. They alone make the bulk of European artillery shells.

“Curious where the Czech shells are... Where are they coming from?”

The Czech Government, led by President Petr Pavel (who held the position of Chairman of the NATO Military Committee from 2015 to 2018, and served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces between 2012 and 2015.) scoured the Earth for countries with the right Artillery shells in inventory, who would be willing to sell some. Publicly, they say that they have identified 1.5 million that are available now, for cash on the barrel.

Many supplying countries don’t want their names mentioned, to avoid disrupting relations with Russia, but I have seen some reports that include BRICS countries, like India, Brazil and South Africa - or even countries that Russia considers(ed) allies. Some others don’t want to be mentioned, to avoid shaming for not donating the shells, but instead holding out to be paid for them (it is hard for many countries to fund their Defense).

The big thing about the Czech initiative, is that the shells exist, and just need to ship. They have already started flowing.

When the EU started debating how much each country would pay for the Military supplies for Ukraine, France was a strong proponent that Europe needed to expand its Defense Industrial Base, and should therefor buy all their equipment and supplies internally, to help fund their industrial build out.

That approach would of course lead to a long lead time between procurement decision/funding and the actual delivery. That in turn, would require the USA to provide the bulk of Ukraine’s supplies, for a couple of years, until European factories were built out. Based on past experience, the Europeans, almost without fail, in the end fail to provide their agreed upon proportion of the bill. Typically, they will come through with only a third or a half of their commitments (like the Bonn Agreement to rebuild the Afghan Government and Military, or the NATO obligation of 2% of GDP). The Europeans committed to providing a million shells last year, but only delivered about 300,000.

This time however, the USA did not just cough up the extra supplies when the Europeans dragged their feet, and Petr Pavel’s Government came to the rescue with the leadership to fill the breach. May God bless him.

Kyiv Independent reports (26 March, 2024):

“Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky told journalists that Slovenia will join Czechia’s initiative to supply artillery shells for Ukraine, Radio Prague International reported on March 26.

The initiative was founded in February, when Czech President Petr Pavel said that Prague had identified 500,000 155 mm shells and 300,000 122 mm shells outside of Europe that could be bought and sent to Ukraine if provided with the necessary funding.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on March 12 that the initiative has already secured the purchase of 300,000 shells and received nonbinding commitments for 200,000 more.

Slovenia plans to allocate one million euros ($1.08 million) to the initiative, Radio Prague International reported, citing Slovenian news agency Sta.

Slovenia joins over a dozen other countries that have committed to the initiative, including the Netherlands, Iceland, France, and Lithuania.

The initiative may deliver as many as 1.5 million rounds, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said in an interview with Bloomberg published on March 26.

While the Czech foreign minister declined to give a timeline for the delivery of the shells, Tomas Pojar, a Czech national security adviser, said earlier that the first batches could be sent to Ukraine as early as June.” (That is later than what I understood, for the first batches - probably they are experiencing late payments of pledged donations, as per their SOP)

As expected, Sweden is taking an active political leadership role within NATO, to spur the bloc into action against Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Kyiv Independent reports:

“NATO is not doing enough for Ukraine and some countries in the alliance don’t “understand that the conflict is here and that we need to deal with it,” Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom told Euractiv on March 27.

“We have to understand that Russia is a neighbor that is behaving irresponsibly, which is threatening the world with irresponsible nuclear threats and the idea of recreating its former empire at the expense of independent sovereign states… We have to put an end to that,” he said.

Sweden officially joined NATO on March 7, almost two years after it applied to join the alliance in a direct response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and in a reversal of 200 years of formal military neutrality.

Billstrom said that in order to stop Russia “we first of all have to stop the aggression against Ukraine.”

“Not all countries understand the sense of urgency to act that there is,” he said, adding: “NATO is not doing enough for Ukraine.”...

...Latvia last year reintroduced mandatory military service and Warsaw has begun building bomb shelters. Such levels of rhetoric and concern have been largely absent in Western European countries but in recent weeks, French President Emmanuel Macron called Russia’s war against Ukraine “existential” for France and Europe and warned that Moscow’s potential victory would “reduce Europe’s credibility to zero.””

Kyiv Post reports:

France Doubles Down on Weapons to Ukraine, Top Official Says Russia Leaves No Option but Arms Build-Up.

“Precision-guided AASM bombs will be rigged for Danish and Dutch F-16 fighter jets Ukraine expects in May or June. Paris also plans to send excellent howitzers and old Africa-capable vehicles.”...

...”Speaking at a government presentation to media called “Industrial Strengthening: Arms and Munitions,” (French Defense Minister Sebastian ) Lecornu said his government intends to overhaul France’s military production and increase capacity and output, and that the Ukrainian military will receive a healthy share of the weaponry...

...Lecornu told reporters France in 2024 intends to manufacture 600 AASM guided bombs (50/month) and that production will double to 1,200 in 2025 (100/month), and that deliveries to Ukraine should continue as planned...

...Bomb performance varies depending on altitude of bomb drop, speed of aircraft, type of guidance available, and weight of munition, among other factors. At maximum rated performance a “dumb” bomb fitted with an AASM guidance system could theoretically plant a powerful 250 kg. munition within one meter of an aiming point, at a range in excess of 70 km...

...On the Ukrainian battlefield, Russian bomb guidance kits currently in use are about half as capable as an AASM-fitted bomb (sometimes called HAMMER), or its comparable US counterpart, the laser-guided JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) bomb guidance kit.

Lecornu said discussions with Ukrainian military engineers are in progress to adapt the French AASM bomb kit to American F-16 fighter jets donated to Kyiv from Denmark and the Netherlands. The first six F-16s, with trained Ukrainian pilots, reportedly will reach the Ukrainian Air Force by May or June. Since March the Ukrainian Air Force has used modified MiG-29 fighters to make AASM drops.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Jan. 16 first announced planned deliveries of 50 AASM bomb kits a month. The first publicly reported use of the weapon was on March 4, in the southern Kherson sector.

Production of France’s powerful SCALP cruise missile, a weapon used by Ukraine in multiple successful strikes against Russian warships, will be restarted, and in 2024, 40 of the missiles will be produced, Lecornu said. He did not indicate how many, if any, would go to Ukraine.

France will up its artillery ammunition manufacture to about 100,000 shells in 2024, Lecornu said, and of those munitions 80,000 155mm rounds will go to Ukraine. Currently, French 155mm shell delivery to Ukraine is “reaching” 2,000 units a month, he said. Some military analysts have questioned whether French industry is capable of more than quadrupling national shell production in nine months.

The French government will, if needed, use constitutional powers allowing the state to requisition industrial capacity and set arms manufacturer priorities, and mandate minimum stocks, to accelerate the production of shells and other military material for Ukraine, Lecornu said.

“We need things to go quicker, to change faster. This is important for Ukraine and the credibility of our military,” he said. “I have the authority.”

Production of France’s advanced Caesar self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine is on track and a total 78 systems will be delivered to Kyiv by the end of 2024 (let’s see), Lecornu said. France, Denmark, and Ukraine are financing the production at facilities owned by Nexter, the major French arms manufacturer.

France also will donate as military aid to Ukraine VAB armored personnel carriers and AMX-10 reconnaissance vehicles from existing stocks, Lecornu said.

Both vehicles are lightly armored and built on wheeled chassis and designed for expeditionary warfare often against insurgents in Africa and Asia. On the Ukrainian battlefield wheeled vehicles not designed for intense conventional warfare, no matter the manufacturer, have had problems moving in mud conditions, or riding out strikes by FPV drones or modern artillery...

...On March 5, during a speech in Prague, Macron called on the US and Ukraine’s European allies not to be “cowardly” in dealings with Moscow, and said Paris was considering the deployment of French troops to Ukraine.

On March 21, Putin ally Pyotr Tolstoy, vice-president of Russia’s rubber stamp parliament the Duma, said it would take “just two minutes to nuke Paris” were French troops to deploy to Ukraine. Lecornu said France is a sovereign nuclear power and would take all steps necessary, including “massive military investment,” to guarantee French security.

Although the Macron government in recent months has led the verbal assault against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, by material standards other states have contributed more. Probably most substantial has been a Czech Republic initiative kicked off in February to source critically needed artillery shells for the Ukrainian army by buying them on international markets rather than waiting for slow-to-gear-up EU production.

By late March some 800,000 shells had been located and funded, and Prague officials had declared another 700,000 found and ready for purchase. Most European states have kicked in funding to the Czech shell purchasing plan, but not France. Germany had promised $325 million to buy 180,000 shells. According to the Kiel Institute’s Ukraine Support Tracker, German support to Ukraine of all types at about $25 billion is more than ten times larger than France’s.”
