Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

They might be making a suicide run to resupply Crimea or to attack Odesa. Really strange. Never seen anything like this before in over 2 years.

Where do they have to retreat to? —

The Caspian Sea. There’s a canal that leads from the Don to the Caspian.

If everybody left, it looks like dispersing before an incoming attack.

If they went on a mission of some sort, it would seem unlikely that they would all go. Not every ship is suitable for every task.

I think a Naval attack on Odessa would be a high casualty exercise for the Russians, with little prospect of being to hold anything or meaningfully follow up.

Russia suddenly cleared its ships out of Novorossisk.

The evacuees:

2 Vasily Byko type patrol boats, 2 Buyan-M type missile launchers, 2 Ropuchas, 1 Ivan Gren type landing ship and another Tapir type and 2 Kilo class submarines.

ETCM, Is there any realistic mission profile that might use such a task force, or are they likely dispersing before an expected incoming attack?

Most likely just sortieing to avoid an expected attack. Potentially, the Patrol boats and Corvettes could provide protection for the landing craft, but not for an amphibious landing.

It is possible they are getting everything out of the Black Sea. The missile platforms can still launch from the Caspian Sea.

Maybe the F-16 Pilot training was more of a “Train the Trainer”, to set up a training program within Ukraine. It seems like there is now a trend toward sending trainers into country, beyond just the F-16 Program.

Greek Reporter (?) (https://greekreporter.com/2024/06/03/greek-pilot-first-foreign-instructor-f-16-ukraine/):

Greek Pilot Is the First Foreign Instructor for F-16 in Ukraine

By Tasos Kokkinidis, June 3, 2024

“A Greek pilot has reportedly arrived in Ukraine becoming the first foreign instructor for the use of the F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine’s air force.

The foreign instructor is a flight officer of the Greek Air Force, as reported by Defencepoint.gr. To date, there has been no official confirmation from the Greek Ministry of Defense...

...The arrival of the Greek pilot in the Ukrainian capital is assumed to be part of the F-16 Training Coalition initiative, an international coalition established on July 13, 2023, at the NATO summit in Vilnius to train Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel to operate this type of fighter aircraft.

A memorandum was signed between 11 nations and Ukraine during the Vilnius Summit. As part of the signed memorandum, Ukrainian pilots, technicians, and support personnel will participate in the training program. The coalition consisted of Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

According to the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Denmark and the Netherlands took leadership of the formed coalition and the two nations are to outline the training plan.

At the end of August (2023), eight Ukrainian pilots and 65 additional personnel, arrived in Denmark at the Skrydstrup Air Base to conduct training on basic tactical and technical levels.

On 22 August (2023), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Greece joined the coalition and would help with the training of Ukrainian pilots.

US News reports:

“KYIV (Reuters) - Kyiv expects to receive its first F-16 fighter jets from its Western allies in June-July, a high-ranking Ukrainian military source said on Friday...

...Illya Yevlash, spokesperson for the air force, said this week that some Ukrainian pilots were completing their training to fly the warplanes.”

I believe most of us are disappointed at the slow training of the pilots and slow delivery of the F-16s.

My guess is that USAF active duty do not fly F-16As/Bs and are unable to support training UKF pilots.

It is possible that the Tucson Air National Guard is the only Guard Unit that has F-16AM/BM configured jets. Therefore, it is the only U.S. base that can train Ukrainian pilots.

Based on some reports I have read, all Ukrainian pilots are getting the long course (6 to 7 months) regardless of how many flight hours they have.

Comments welcome.

Russian strategic bombers airborne and en route to their cruise missile launch lines. I also expect Kalibr launches from Black Sea subs and other launch ships.

[ Liberation on The Way. Ukrainians Successfully Advance in Vovchansk ]

Day 834: Jun 06

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Kharkiv direction.

The situation in Vovchansk remains highly volatile as the Armed Forces of Ukraine have launched significant counterattacks on different vectors within the city.

Recent developments indicate substantial gains by Ukrainian forces, who have managed to recapture several key areas within the city.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have successfully counterattacked in Vovchansk, recapturing several blocks and pushing Russian forces out of parts of the city center.

According to a renowned German press military analyst, in mid-May, Russian forces captured the northern part of Vovchansk and expanded to several central blocks.

However, recent Ukrainian advancements have reduced the Russian control to approximately a quarter of the city, down from nearly half just days ago.

Remarkably, the recaptured areas are located mainly in 3 areas, that is, just west of the Citadel, a bit further south close to the aggregate plant, and in the easternmost area of the city, where the Ukrainians are pushing strongly to the north.

This shift in control highlights the effectiveness of the Ukrainian counteroffensive efforts.

In particular, recent reports underline the importance of the Ukrainian success in holding their positions in the “citadel”. This area is characterized by high, well-fortified buildings that are used by Ukrainian forces to decimate any Russian advance into the area.

Geolocated footage corroborates reports of Ukrainian forces making significant headway and reclaiming different critical areas previously under Russian control.

The first video shows the tight surveillance reconnaissance drones keep over the streets of Vovchansk. The drone detects a group of infantry trying to hide in a garage area.

After the first impact of an FPV drone, some soldiers managed to escape and take shelter in a second garage just 20 meters away from the first one.

Unfortunately for the Russians, the whole scene is captured by the reconnaissance drone, which marks the target to a 2nd FPV drone that hits the garage, eliminating the Russian soldiers who were trying to take shelter there.

A 2nd video shows a building west of the aggregates plant, taken as a shelter by a Russian infantry group. Reconnaissance teams mark the target for Ukrainian artillery that delivers a devastating barrage on the building, demolishing it.

The images suggest that Ukrainian artillery equipment is still fully operational and that Russian counter-battery efforts are, therefore, proving unsuccessful.

For their part, Russian forces relied mainly on air-strikes with glide bombs, although, for the moment, Ukrainian forces have managed to hold positions and use them to launch their counterattacks.

Numerous videos appeared recently with drone panoramic views of the city of Vovchansk, showing how the Russians are trying to level it completely.

A prominent Russian milblogger has outlined three primary reasons for the stalling of the Russian offensive operation in northern Kharkiv region.

Firstly, Russian forces have struggled to isolate the battlefield effectively, failing at disrupting Ukrainian logistic efforts.

Despite Russian heavy shelling and the destruction of numerous bridges using glider bombs, Ukrainian engineers have continuously repaired and established pontoon crossing points, ensuring the steady supply of Ukrainian forces north of the Vovcha River.

Secondly, Ukrainian FPV drones have significantly hindered Russian infantry advancements within the city. In addition, a considerable presence of Ukrainian snipers and special forces, particularly the KRAKEN unit, has further hampered Russian efforts.

Thirdly, Russian counter-battery warfare has for the most part failed to constrain Ukrainian artillery fire, allowing Ukrainian forces to maintain a robust offensive capability.

In a turn of events, the American administration has recently permitted Ukraine to use US-provided weapons, including HIMARS rockets, for counter-fire purposes against Russian forces on Russian soil in the Kharkiv direction.

This long-awaited decision led to immediate and numerous HIMARS attacks on Russian bases, equipment, ammunition depots, and anti-aircraft systems throughout the Belgorod region.

These strikes have significantly undermined the logistics of the attacking forces in the Liptsy and Vovchansk directions.

But Ukrainian forces not only leveraged American systems to target Russian logistics. Recent geolocated footage showed a Russian convoy making the critical mistake of driving in a close-range column near the Sumy region border.

The convoy was quickly detected and attacked by numerous FPV drones. The dramatic scenes show how several of the vehicles try to flee and hide among several groves of trees while Ukrainian drone operators meticulously targeted and destroyed all eighteen vehicles in the convoy, highlighting the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone warfare.

Russian forces find themselves in a precarious situation in the Vovchansk direction. What began as a diversionary offensive intended to stretch Ukrainian forces, and to create and maintain a buffer zone north of the Vovcha River has turned into a defensive struggle.

Russian forces are now suffering significant logistical disruptions and losing positions to Ukrainian counteroffensives.

As the last nail in the coffin, the American decision to allow Ukrainian attacks with American weapons on Russian territory has derailed Russian plans, forcing them to assume substantial and disproportionate personnel and equipment losses to avoid the political fallout of a withdrawal only after a month of the beginning of the offensive.

Overall, the situation in Vovchansk remains highly contested, with Ukrainian forces making significant gains through effective counteroffensive operations.

The considerable personnel superiority, along with the massive use of drones, artillery, and US-provided weapons allowance on Russian territory, has shifted the momentum in favor of Ukraine.

The continuous disruptions to Russian logistics and the recapture of key areas by Ukrainian forces indicates that the upper hand in this direction has definitely shifted to the Ukrainian side.

Missile strike on Lugansk. More than 20 soldiers died

The enemy launched a massive attack on Lugansk. As a result of missile hits and falling debris, according to preliminary data, 22 military personnel were killed. More than 20 more were injured.

According to our sources in the LPR government and the General Staff, the missiles hit “the building where a meeting of officers was taking place” ( at least four were killed ), as well as an important military facility. Another facility and civilian houses were seriously damaged, including by falling fragments of downed missiles.

“It was ATACMS. Such missiles are difficult to shoot down. Therefore, unfortunately, we have both casualties among civilians and serious casualties among the military. Important equipment related to the operation of electronic warfare and air defense systems was also disabled. Which one, of course, I won’t tell you,” one of the interlocutors noted.

According to a source in the General Staff, 22 soldiers were killed.

“For peaceful reasons, let the civil authorities comment. As for the military, the situation is sad,” he said.

The interlocutor also called on residents of Lugansk to go to bomb shelters. He complained that even the military, who “for some reason have relaxed,” are not doing this now.

While fear-mongering MSN talking heads clung to Putin’s every word, as he blustered about using nuclear weapons, behind the scenes the real purpose and meaning emerged:

Kremlin snuff box, 06/06/24
https://t.me/s/kremlin_secrets

Putin decided to personally deal with the mobilization in Ukraine. This is good, but there are two alarming points

We are asked: why did Vladimir Putin talk about mobilization in Ukraine? This is not quite the level of the President. But it’s not that simple.

We have written more than once:
Many of our military consider one of the most important tasks within the framework of the North Military District to be the disruption of the mobilization carried out by the Kiev regime. And this task has not yet been completed, rather the opposite. Therefore, the President decided to say his weighty word.

“Vladimir Vladimirovich sees that the efforts of our military and special services to disrupt mobilization in Ukraine are not bringing the desired result. Let’s tell the truth. And he decided to personally address the issue. I think that Vladimir Vladimirovich’s words will demoralize the enemy, and the goal of disrupting the mobilization that Zelensky is pursuing will be achieved.

“After all, our President doesn’t just say such things, people will listen to him - both in Ukraine and in the West. And about mobilization, and about the supply of our weapons, by the way,” explained our source in the Kremlin.

We support this decision. But there are two difficult points in it.

Firstly, Andrei Belousov actually refused to work in this important area.

“Andrei Removich honestly says that he is not a military man at his core. And for him it is difficult to disrupt enemy mobilization. Therefore, it is better to let specialists deal with this issue, and he will fight against theft and bribes and worry about supplying the army,” a source in the Ministry of Defense explained to us.

Secondly, such words from Putin upset many military and intelligence officers.

“You have no idea how much we have done to ensure the failure of mobilization in Ukraine. It’s a shame this attitude on the part of Vladimir Vladimirovich,” admitted a source in the FSB.

“The President was told all sorts of things by not very smart advisers. The problem was presented very simply. Disrupting enemy mobilization is a much more complex topic than it seems. But who listens to our specialists now,” said a source in the General Staff with offense.

Kremlin snuff box, 06/06/24
https://t.me/s/kremlin_secrets

Putin is disappointed by the blows to the Ukrainian energy sector

According to two Kremlin sources, the president believes that “the Ukrainians still have a lot of light left after our strikes.”

“Vladimir Vladimirovich recently said that the military is working ineffectively and cannot knock out the entire energy sector of Ukraine. He noted that, perhaps, in such situations it would be better to abandon these strikes altogether. But I don’t think we will give up on them,” said one of our interlocutors.

At the same time, several military sources complain that our attacks on Ukrainian energy could result in the Kyiv regime receiving new Western air defense systems. And an increase in the number of attacks by Western weapons deep into Russian territory.

“I fear that as a result of our strikes on enemy energy, the Ukrainian rear will become more protected, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces may begin to shoot down more of our aircraft. I hope the relevant services are working to disrupt the supply of new air defense systems to the enemy,” said a source in the General Staff.

At the same time, the military refuses to say whether massive attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector will continue, citing military secrets.
