Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Or as it is - these are clan wars, Criminal clans are uniquely Russian, ever since Moscow emerged out of the swamps in the late 17th century.

That is an excellent point.
I wonder if even one give a whit about the Russian federation people. Power and money seem the major motivating factor.

To those with more power if someone appears to be a threat they are gone whether through a window or off to prison

The arrests of generals continue: who is next? We learned three names

Detentions and arrests of high-ranking generals, which intensified after Andrei Belousov became Minister of Defense, continue. And the arrested Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Vadim Shamarin, is far from the last high-ranking military man in this row.

According to our sources in the Ministry of Defense and the Kremlin, the activities of many generals ( and not only in the ministry itself and in the General Staff ) are now under close scrutiny, and non-public investigative actions are being conducted.

We don’t want to please the enemy (in Kyiv they are happy after every high-profile arrest in our country), but we must note that we know the names of those military leaders who may become next. There are quite a lot of them.

But the most serious questions have accumulated for the former commander-in-chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, generals Alexander Lapin and Andrei Kuzmenko. According to one of the interlocutors, they are guilty of “especially grave sins.”

There are also many questions for the generals and the command of the Special Forces. It turned out that the elite fighters were guarding not only Shoigu’s deputy Timur Ivanov ( this data our sources, unfortunately, confirmed ), but also many other generals. As well as their housing and especially valuable property.

By the way, the information about the MTR reached Vladimir Putin; Alexey Dyumin personally reported it to him. Alexey Gennadievich was extremely outraged by the fact that elite fighters were being used for such purposes and asked the president for a tough reaction to this blatant fact.

What’s sad is that, against the backdrop of anti-corruption arrests of generals, the settling of scores with unwanted military leaders will most likely continue. Many sources in the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff fear that the case of General Ivan Popov is only the first sign in this unpleasant process.

Purges in the army continue. Belousov has critics who are worried that we will lose to the Northern Military District

The purges among the generals, which we have written about more than once, continue. Significant in this regard was the rather tough personnel decision regarding General Sukhrab Akhmedov.

“In addition to the fight against corruption, we began to fight against military leaders who did not and do not take care of their personnel and equipment. Akhmedov is only the beginning of this process,” a source in the Ministry of Defense close to Andrei Belousov told us.

This position worried a number of our interlocutors in the ministry and the General Staff.

“First of all, many of us respect Akhmedov, no matter what. Yes, there are different opinions about him, his personality is ambiguous, he has made mistakes. But he played an important role in the Northern Military District.

“It seems that Mr. Belousov does not quite understand who our army is based on, and this will lead to problems at the front.

“Secondly, what does it mean to “not protect personnel”? Will we now punish generals and commanders in general for all losses? So they will stop sending people into battle, and that will be the end of it,” worries one of the interlocutors who contacted us and asked us to publish this position.

Another, admitting that many military personnel have a bad attitude towards Akhmedov, still condemned such actions against the general.

“Using losses as a cover, you can blame anyone. This will begin the hunt for dissenters. The process may get out of control. If this happens, we will lose to the Northern Military District,” warned a general close to Valery Gerasimov.

We asked people from Belousov’s circle to comment on these opinions, but have not yet received a response.

“Reuters reports that it will take Boeing months to fix the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb’s (GLSDB) vulnerability to Russian electronic warfare.

It “can defeat some jamming” but has proven less resilient than GMLRS & JDAM-ER.

It is likely that there are other issues as well beyond the EW vulnerability, per comments from US Undersecretary of Defense LaPlante. “

[ Ukrainians Launch Successful Counterattacks! ]

Day 820: May 23

Today, there are a lot of developments in the Avdiivka direction.

Here, Ukrainians have halted the Russian breakthrough and commenced counterattacks to regain lost positions.

The main Russian objective to the west of Avdiivka is to take control over the Ukrainian city and headquarters of Pokrovsk. Ukrainians have established numerous defensive lines to defend the city.

As Russians had taken huge losses in attacking the Ukrainian lines head-on, they attempted to utilize their breakthrough near Ocheretyne to outflank the Ukrainian defenses and collapse the frontline.

Over the past month, Russian forces have leveraged their breakthrough near Ocheretyne to take control over as many settlements as possible. Ukrainians, initially still suffering from a significant shortage of artillery shells, utilized intense drone strikes to halt the Russian momentum.

At the same time, the Russian offensive effort near Chasiv-Yar and Kharkiv limited the Russian ability to reinforce their losses in the salient adequately. With insufficient reinforcements and a high rate of losses, the Russian offensive is quickly stalling.

Despite their quickly draining combat capabilities, Russians continued to attempt localized attacks to improve their tactical situation and consolidate their gains.

In particular, Russians tried to increase their buffer zone south-west of Ocheretyne by attacking toward the settlements of Sokil and Novopokrovske. Towards Novopokrovske, Russian infantry assault groups advanced through the tree lines with the support of numerous tanks.

Drone operators from the 47th Mechanized Brigade released geolocated footage of a Russian assault consisting of 2 armored personnel carriers and a T-90M tank. Interestingly, the Russian tank was not leading the assault group and was instead held back for support.

The first armored personnel carrier then promptly drove over an anti-tank mine and was destroyed on impact. Russian infantry on the second armored transport then quickly dismounted and attempted to take cover while Ukrainian artillery opened fire on their positions.

The Russian assault quickly devolved into chaos, as the supporting tank turned around to escape from the Ukrainian artillery barrage. During its retreat, the tank was hit by an FPV drone, disabling it as the crew fled to safety.

Footage from a second observation drone shows how another Russian tank was sent into the settlement to support the Russian infantry. This tank was hit by an FPV drone as well, but managed to make it out of the settlement, where it was later abandoned.

Astonishingly, Russians sent a third tank into the village, which also quickly turned around as soon as Ukrainian artillery shells started exploding near it. Ukrainian drone operators later shared footage of how they finished off both disabled Russian tanks with FPV kamikaze drones.

The Russian attacks toward Sokil went similarly; Russian assault groups transported by armored personnel carriers attacked the settlement of Sokil. The armored transports drove over mines, whereafter, the infantry dismounted and were engaged by Ukrainian artillery.

However, here, Russian assault groups managed to take up positions in the clearing halfway down the road. Another failed Russian assault was also halted halfway, but this time with an FPV kamikaze drone.

Ukrainian artillery crews then opened fire on the remaining Russian infantry with cluster munitions. Ukrainians also deployed a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle to finish off the Russian vehicle together with the infantry.

After the attacks, Ukrainians decided to degrade the Russian infantry, not only in their newly established positions, but also in the settlements themselves.

Geolocated footage shows how Ukrainian drone operators intensely targeted Russian infantry with FPV kamikaze drones during the day and drone-dropped grenades at night. Ukrainians also detected a large group of infantry moving into one of the houses to take shelter there.

Ukrainians later detected many more of these shelters and equipped their FPV drones with heavy explosives to effectively collapse and destroy these buildings. Besides destroying all Russian infantry inside, collapsing the building itself also denies Russian soldiers the ability to use these for shelter in the future.

Ukrainians also released footage showing the extent of the Russian losses towards Novopokrovske, as the video showed close to 50 Russian personnel losses [ dead ] in a tree line of under 100 meters. With their losses quickly mounting, Russian forces in Soloviove desperately needed reinforcements.

They sent forward multiple armored personnel carriers filled with infantry to the settlement, but were all destroyed by FPV drones and artillery.

After Russian forces in the area were severely weakened, Ukrainians started carefully probing the Russian defenses for weak spots. Ukrainian attacked with Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, opening fire on and destroying Russian positions in front of Soloviove.

These probing attacks went exceedingly well, as Russian military bloggers confirmed that Ukrainians had retaken numerous tree lines and trench networks around Soloviove.

Overall, Ukrainian forces have severely depleted the Russian breakthrough near Ocheretyne to the point where Russians are unable to execute any large-scale maneuvers. Russians carried out a series of costly attacks, receiving only marginal gains in return.

Ukrainians have taken advantage of these high Russian losses by unleashing intense drone strikes, targeting Russian infantry, shelters, and reinforcements around Soloviove.

This caused Ukrainians to be in a position to be able to carry out localized counterattacks, retaking control over several trenches and tree lines.

Maintaining control over these positions creates a tactical advantage for the Ukrainians, as it prevents Russian assault groups from directly attacking the settlements of Sokil and Novopokrovske.

As Russians continue to suffer from a lack of reinforcements, Ukrainians will be able to regain the initiative and force the Russians back before they can dig in.

Again bad news from Crimea. We lost almost 30 military and air defense systems

Another missile strike that the enemy launched on Crimea on the evening of Thursday, May 23, led to serious consequences. “Some of the missiles penetrated our air defense system. Unfortunately, the attack was too large. The consequences are serious,” said a source in the General Staff.

According to our data, the losses suffered as a result of the strike are heavy. In the Simferopol region (in particular, in Gvardeysky), Alushta and not far from Bakhchisarai, unfortunately, there were hits.

3 S-400 air defense systems, 1 S-300 air defense system, and several radars were lost. Also, more than 20 pieces of equipment that were being prepared to be sent to the SVO zone were damaged or completely lost. There is information about the loss of 2 Su-25 aircraft, but we do not have 100% confirmation of this information; it still requires verification.

As a result of the strike, 29 soldiers were killed and more than 35 were wounded.

We want to say an important thing. While the authorities, including the new leadership of the Ministry of Defense, promise to take care of personnel and equipment, and our army simultaneously suffers such heavy losses, we will talk about these losses in detail.

With the hope, in particular, that the problems with the air defense of Crimea, which have been known for a long time, will be resolved.

Gerasimov is not yet ready to shoot at NATO troops. And in Moscow there are strange rumors about the transfer of the capital

The West will most likely give the Kyiv regime permission to use its weapons on Russian territories that it does not consider Ukraine ( let us recall that now NATO weapons, in particular American ones, are shelling Crimea and new regions of our country ). Such prospects seriously worry many in Moscow.

“Masha Zakharova, you remember, shouted that we were ready to shoot at British military targets, including outside Ukraine. In reality, everything is not so smooth. Many military personnel, including Gerasimov, are categorically against hitting any NATO military targets.

“Let me clarify and I won’t hide it: we are preparing for such attacks. But the military says that Moscow is not yet ready for large-scale shelling with which they can respond to us.

“And they believe that it is better to start a conflict with NATO, let’s say, not now ( we wrote about this - ed. https://t.me/kremlin_secrets/3996 ). So there are fears that Western missiles will come to us from Ukraine. But it’s difficult to answer right now,” a high-ranking source in the Kremlin admitted to us.

A general from Gerasimov’s entourage confirmed these fears and expressed the hope that “the escalation will not yet go beyond the boundaries of the Northern Military District.”

He refused to talk about the war with NATO. But he noticed that the head of the General Staff, against the backdrop of all the threats, is concerned about the imbalance of the army in connection with the arrests of generals [ https://t.me/kremlin_secrets/4138 ].

At the same time, against the background of the growing threat of an escalation of the conflict with NATO, talk about a possible temporary transfer of the capital from Moscow has become more frequent.

Let us remember that such a transfer was discussed back in 2022. Then Sergei Shoigu proposed [ https://t.me/kremlin_secrets/3742 ] to strike Ukraine with nuclear weapons; a serious response from the West was possible.

Discussions about moving the capital [ https://t.me/kremlin_secrets/4047 ] began with renewed vigor in May of this year, when our relations with the British and other NATO countries worsened. And now concerns about what will happen to Moscow are growing.

“I would move the capital. There are options, but I won’t reveal them to you so that the enemies don’t find out. I expressed all my thoughts on this matter to Vladimir Vladimirovich, he promised to think about it.

“By the way, I would move the Ministry of Defense to Sevastopol. Let them know how to work in war conditions. I also conveyed this position to the President,” a Kremlin source close to Vladimir Putin told us.

Let us note that new rumors about the possible transfer of the capital appeared among representatives of our elites several weeks ago. This fact was confirmed to us by several sources.

Moreover, they name both plausible versions of the temporary capital (Kazan, Yaroslavl), and strange versions that we personally find difficult to believe. For example, that the capital of Russia will be moved to Vladivostok.

The Kremlin is surprised by such an active general purge of Belousov. According to rumors, Shoigu could become his “victim”

Over the past month, 4 generals have already been arrested in Russia. And this is not the limit. There have never been such large-scale purges at the top of the Ministry of Defense. They began even before the departure of Sergei Shoigu, but became more active with the arrival of the new Minister of Defense.

The activities of Andrei Belousov have already divided the Kremlin. Some believe that he is bringing order. Others say that his waving of a saber could end in the punishment of the innocent, and in general could have an unpleasant ending for Belousov himself.

“He didn’t have time to enter the ministry, and the generals were already being taken away from there. One by one. This, let’s say, upsets a certain balance. And it definitely strengthens the influence of the FSB,” commented a source in the Kremlin’s political bloc.

The Ministry of Defense does not hide its surprise at the scale with which Belousov launched his activities.

“It turns out that everyone around was stealing, but no one knew. Neither Shoigu, nor the President. Is this how it turns out? Otherwise, why did Shoigu go for a promotion, albeit a formal one? They promised not to touch him, but the rest?

“Now, it turns out, anyone can find themselves between. There were rumors that at least five generals received an offer to hand over the schemes that were used to make money under Shoigu,” said an interlocutor once close to Shoigu.

Interlocutors at the FSB do not hide their interest in the schemes in the Ministry of Defense, but clarify that no one received any immunity.

“If we have to, we’ll get to Shoigu,” a high-ranking FSB officer told us.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, May 22, 2024
https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-may-22-2024

United Kingdom (UK) Defense Minister Grant Shapps stated on May 22 that US and UK intelligence have evidence that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) “is now or will be” providing lethal military assistance to Russia, a statement that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan questioned.

Shapps stated that this evidence is a “significant development” as the PRC has previously presented itself as a “moderating influence” but did not provide further information about the supposed intelligence.

Sullivan stated during a press conference that he has previously warned that the PRC may supply Russia with lethal military assistance but that the US has “not seen that to date.”

Sullivan stated that he will speak with his British counterparts to ensure that the US and UK have a “common operating picture” and to clarify Shapps’ comment.

Western officials warned that Russian intelligence services intend to increase sabotage activities and other hybrid operations against NATO member countries.

Norway’s Police Security Service (PST) and the Norwegian Intelligence Service (NIS) warned on May 22 that there is an increased threat of Russian sabotage against Norwegian arms supplies and other Norwegian organizations involved in the delivery of military materiel to Ukraine.

PST Counterintelligence Head Inger Haugland stated that the PST has warned Norwegian arms suppliers to be on high alert and previously warned that Russian actors were planning acts of sabotage in western Norway, where Norwegian naval bases and oil and gas infrastructure are located.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on May 20 that Polish authorities have recently arrested and charged nine suspects for engaging in acts of sabotage in Poland on behalf of Russian security services.

Haugland stated that Russian security services have used non-Russian nationals to conduct sabotage in Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom in order to have deniability.

Tusk also warned on May 21 that Russian actors plan to illegally smuggle thousands of migrants from Africa to Europe and that more than 90 percent of those recently apprehended illegally entering Poland have had Russian visas in their passports.

{ One has to wonder how many of the illegals crossing our borders are assisted by Russian operatives in reaching South America/Central America }

Russian officials recently attempted to create an artificial migrant crisis on the Finnish border in late 2023 in an effort to destabilize NATO and the European Union (EU).

Russian security services are likely intensifying sabotage operations in European countries to disrupt the arrival of resumed US security assistance to Ukraine and will likely continue hybrid operations aimed at fomenting discord in Europe ahead of European Parliament elections scheduled for early June 2024.

“1/5 Finally, the aftermath of the Ukrainian UAV strike on the Kushchyovskaya air base in Krasnodar Oblast, as seen in a HR planet image from May 23rd. 1 Su-27 is destroyed. 1 Su-34 is also heavily damaged. The Su-30 near the destroyed Su-27 might be damaged as well.

2/5 Destroyed Su-27: @planet stills (May 5th/May23).

3/5 The size and even the Su-27 livery seem to match the satellite images. Also, confirmed by @cxemu with the aviation expert.

3/5 Damaged Su-34: @planet stills (May 11/May 23).

4/5 What happened here? :) (crop from @planet May 23 image)

5/5 Su-30 barely moved after the strike, as @planet May 23 image shows. Unlike most of the other aircraft on the base it wasn’t evacuated, also it was standing very close to the destroyed Su-27, so I assume it might be badly damaged as well.”
