Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

⚡️Russian media reports that at night, 🇺🇦 Ukrainian drones attacked the 🇷🇺 Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system in the Belgorod region. The air defense system was damaged, two Russian soldiers were wounded.

The Pantsir-S1 air defense system is a short range (out to 18km), point defense system.

Most likely, it was being used to protect a high value target, such as an ammo dump.

“Russian propagandists have disseminated a recording of a confidential conversation among senior German military officials, exposing a significant lapse within Germany’s armed forces.

The Bundeswehr officials involved were overheard discussing the potential provision of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, a conversation that carries weighty implications for the Bundeswehr and the delicate balances of international military aid. The recording’s origins, dating back to February 19th, point to the authentic nature of the conversation, although as of the time of the report, the German military has not formally acknowledged the tape’s legitimacy.

According to BILD, The German Defense Ministry’s spokesperson has stated that an investigation is underway to ascertain if communications within the Air Force were indeed compromised, with the Military Counterintelligence Service (BAMAD) having been mobilized to respond to these developments.

The intercepted dialogue reveals that the German officers were preparing for a briefing with the federal government, contemplating the capabilities of the Taurus missile and the complexities surrounding its deployment to Ukraine. The revelation is particularly incendiary as it contradicts Chancellor Scholz’s previous position that German troops would need to be deployed in Ukraine to justify a refusal to deliver Taurus missiles—a claim not supported by the generals’ alleged conversation. The officers also discussed alternative strategies that could allow Ukraine to employ Taurus missiles without direct targeting assistance from the Bundeswehr, a factor that Chancellor Scholz had suggested would implicate Berlin as a combatant in the war. The leaked conversation touched upon the training of Ukrainian pilots and other technical details, including the carrier systems that could be utilized to launch the Taurus missiles. The call also included speculative targets within Ukraine’s reach using the Taurus missile, with the Kerch Bridge, a vital supply route to the Russian-occupied Crimea, being one such direct example.”

[ Four Unfazed Ukrainian Soldiers Dismantle a Huge Russian Assault Unit ]

==
Day 737: Mar 01

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Orikhiv direction.

Here, Russian forces decided to conduct a sudden offensive operation right after the recent capture of Avdiivka, and according to the latest updates, the intensity of attacks here remains very high.

The main idea behind the sudden offensive was to catch Ukrainian forces off guard because they expected Ukrainians to relocate a portion of their garrison from this direction to Avdiivka to stabilize the front line.

The most intense clashes are taking place in and around Robotyne. Russian forces opened two vectors of attack and are assaulting Ukrainian positions on the outskirts of Robotyne from the south and the southwest.

These are also the most fortified areas around the village because Ukrainians are in control of extensive trench networks, and even though these fortifications incurred notable damage during almost nine months of fighting in the area, they still serve as formidable obstacles.

Last time, we saw how these obstacles helped repel a series of major mechanized attacks, where Russians used up to 30 tanks and, armored vehicles, and 100s of soldiers. The destroyed units were scattered throughout the region, with the survivors even reaching the first houses in the village in an attempt to seek shelter.

This is important because even though the isolated remnants of the Russian forces, who were also virtually with no ammo, were quickly captured by Ukrainians, Russian media sources presented it as a victory. Such premature declarations of victory guarantee that the Russian commanders will order to conduct another wave of attack as soon as possible to catch up with the narrative.

Otherwise, if they fail to catch up with the narrative and the media sources have to roll back and say that Russians actually lost the newly captured positions, it will throw shade on the Russian commanders. That is why Russian forces launched a new wave of attacks.

The next major attack came from the south, and based on the geolocated combat footage, Russian forces used multiple armored fighting vehicles that were carrying several dozens of soldiers.

The armored fighting vehicles were actively suppressing Ukrainian fire while trying to get as deep into the village as possible to deploy the infantry near more intact houses than on the outskirts.

The analysts concluded that such a coordinated Russian attack took Ukrainians by surprise, which is why they did not manage to stop Russians as usual on the approaches and had to engage in urban fighting.

Russian sources reported that Russian infantry assumed their positions in the local school and continued trying to develop their attack further.

Despite the heavy pressure from the Russian infantry, whose attacks were supported by constant artillery fire, Ukrainian forces managed to retain control over the northern half of the village and break the Russian momentum.

Once the momentum was stopped, Ukrainians started conducting counterattacks to reestablish control over the southern part of the village.

Even though Russian sources claimed that the attack was successful, referring to the footage of the initial breakthrough, Ukrainian sources claimed that the Russian attack failed and posted videos showing destroyed equipment and personnel and also lone survivors who were seeking shelter.

To be fair, the Ukrainians barely managed to retain control over their positions.

The Russian commanders, who were observing the battle from drones, understood that this attack significantly undermined the Ukrainian defensive capabilities and started planning the night attack.

As it turned out, after Ukrainians evacuated the wounded, there were only four fighters left on the positions. They anticipated receiving reinforcements within hours, however, the Russian attack came much sooner.

As the insane footage of the night battle reveals, these four Ukrainian fighters accepted the battle against three armored fighting vehicles and twenty-four soldiers.

The Russian assault unit started incurring losses already on the approach, as one of their armored vehicles blew up on a mine. One of the four Ukrainian fighters immediately doubled the damage by hitting the second armored vehicle from an RPG.

Only the 3rd armored fighting vehicle managed to reach the planned destination and landed the infantry in front of the Ukrainian positions.

The four Ukrainian soldiers immediately engaged the attackers and did not allow them to get close. The coordinated gunfire immobilized the Russians and made them an easy target for the Ukrainian artillery, mortar, and drone crews, who supported the four Ukrainian soldiers on the ground with vicious intensity.

Despite suffering multiple injuries from gunfire and shrapnel from high-explosive shells, the four Ukrainian fighters continued to stand their ground until the attack was completely repelled.

When the reinforcements arrived, the four soldiers withdrew to receive medical treatment, while the fresh units went checking basements and taking captive those Russians that survived the night.

Overall, the latest battle in Robotyne clearly demonstrated why the Russian advancements in the region are so slow and unstable. The willingness of the Ukrainian fighters to stand their ground, even in the face of prevailing forces, ensures that Russians pay a significant price for each gained meter.

That is why Russian forces have to resort to human wave attacks - because without overwhelming Ukrainian forces and putting them in a position where they are physically incapable of tracing all moving targets, there is virtually no prospect of securing new gains.

Such a setting allows Ukrainians to impose a high kill-death ratio, making the imposed attrition warfare self-destructive even for Russians.

Prigozhin’s associates announced a reward for the head of the Interior Ministry general

Close associates of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who after his death did not join the army units and other PMCs, are outraged by the words of the head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Rostov Region, General Oleg Agarkov.

“Let us recall that he recently stated that stopping the rebellion in Rostov-on-Don was the merit of the local police, whose employees ‘did not flinch in moments of danger.’

“Everyone saw and knows what happened in Rostov. Our guys took the city in just over an hour. Including the headquarters of the Southern Military District. Evgeny Viktorovich stopped the march on Moscow with a strong-willed decision. There were negotiations at the highest level.

“And now this general is crawling out from under the table and talking about his heroics,” one of the leaders of the PMC, Wagner, explained to us the angry reaction.

According to another Wagnerite, once close to Prigozhin, “the general not only lied, but also defamed the memory of the deceased leader of the Wagner PMC.”

“We are announcing a reward - 5 million rubles for the head of General Agarkov. Alive or dead. But it’s better than alive,” said our interlocutor.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 1, 2024

1. Reported details of Russian-Ukrainian peace negotiations that occurred in Istanbul in April 2022 indicate that Russia has consistently envisioned a settlement for its illegal invasion of Ukraine wherein Ukraine would be unable to defend itself from a future Russian attack - an objective Russia continues to pursue under calls for Ukraine’s 'demilitarization.'

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on March 1 that documents it obtained of the draft treaty from the 2022 Ukrainian-Russian peace negotiations indicate that both sides initially agreed that Ukraine would be a “permanently neutral state that doesn't participate in military blocs.”

The draft treaty also reportedly banned Ukraine from receiving any foreign weapons or hosting any foreign military personnel.

The WSJ reported that Russia pushed for the Ukrainian military to be limited to 85,000 soldiers, 342 tanks, and 519 artillery systems, whereas Ukraine wanted the caps to be 250,000 soldiers, 800 tanks, and 1,900 artillery systems.

Russia also reportedly demanded that Ukrainian missiles be limited to a range of 40 kilometers, a range that would allow Russian forces to deploy critical systems and materiel close to Ukraine without fear of strikes.

The Kremlin has repeatedly called for the 'demilitarization' of Ukraine since its full-scale invasion but has not previously provided details on what that would specifically entail.

The Ukrainian military in 2014 - before Russia’s first invasion - consisted of about 130,000 personnel, and the documents from 2022 indicate that Russia intended to drastically reduce Ukraine’s military to such a level that Ukraine could no longer defend itself.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has most recently emphasized the idea of a “demilitarized” or “sanitary” zone in Ukraine that would place Russian territory - including occupied Ukraine - out of range of both Ukrainian frontline artillery systems and Western-provided long-range systems.

Putin likely aims for the ”demilitarization” of Ukraine to allow him to enforce his will upon Ukraine without any substantial resistance.

2. Reported details of the draft treaty suggest that Russia intended to use the treaty to set conditions for future attacks against Ukraine while also prompting the West to make concessions on Ukraine’s sovereignty. The WSJ reported that the United States, United Kingdom, China, France, and Russia were to be guarantors of the treaty.

Russia also reportedly wanted to include Belarus as a guarantor. The guarantor states were supposed to “terminate international treaties and agreements incompatible with the permanent neutrality of Ukraine,” including military aid agreements.

The WSJ did not specify if other non-guarantor states would have to terminate their agreements with Ukraine as well, although this is likely considering that the treaty would ban Ukraine from having foreign-supplied weapons.

It is unclear what Russia considers to be 'incompatible' with a permanently “neutral” Ukraine, although the Kremlin most certainly would have broadly interpreted this as forbidding Ukraine from joining NATO, which is stipulated by Ukraine’s constitution, thereby likely demanding that Ukraine amend its constitution.

Russia reportedly wanted all guarantors to agree on a response should Ukraine be subject to any attacks, but the WSJ stated that the guarantor states were unlikely to agree on a response should Russia attack Ukraine again - likely due to the guarantor states’ diverging interests.

This stipulation likely intended to allow Russia to influence, predict, and prepare for the international response to any possible future Russian attacks on Ukraine.

ISW continues to assess that any ceasefire would benefit Russia, giving it time to reconstitute and regroup for future offensive operations.

3. Russian authorities suggested that the Kremlin has likely adopted a more extensive set of goals regarding Ukraine over the course of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov responded to the leaked April 2022 draft agreement between Russia and Ukraine, claiming that the draft agreement is “no longer relevant” and that “conditions have changed.”

Peskov's statements are likely part of a current trend of increased Russian confidence in the Russian military’s capabilities and the attainability of Putin’s maximalist war objectives following the recent seizure of Avdiivka and prolonged US debates about military aid to Ukraine.

ISW continues to assess that Russian President Vladimir Putin maintains his maximalist objectives in Ukraine, which are tantamount to complete Ukrainian and Western capitulation, and that Russia has no interest in good-faith negotiations with Ukraine.

4. Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to disparage Russian elites in his February 29 Federal Assembly speech, more closely aligning himself with the veteran and military community and drawing praise from ultranationalist milbloggers.

5. Kremlin officials met with leaders of the pro-Russian Moldovan autonomous region Gagauzia and emphasized Russia’s support for Gagauzia against perceived Moldovan “oppression” on March 1.

6. Ukraine and the Netherlands signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement on March 1.'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Netherlands announced that it would provide 2 billion euros (about $2.17 billion) in military aid to Ukraine in 2024 and additional security assistance over the next 10 years.

Zelensky stated that the bilateral security agreement prioritizes assistance in air defense and artillery systems and naval and long-range weapons.

The Dutch Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced that it will provide Ukraine with 14 rigid-hull inflatable boats, eight paramilitary river patrol boats, and CB90-class fast assault craft.

The Dutch MoD also announced that it is increasing its contribution to the Czech initiative to provide artillery shells to Ukraine from 100 million euros (about $108 million) to 250 million euros (about $271 million).

Russian authorities will likely use annual combat training for Russian reservists to support crypto-mobilization efforts.
