The Russian Church wants all Russians, regardless of their religion, to pay it a tithe—to give a tenth of their income. There has been progress on this issue. “We have been in lengthy discussions with representatives of the Kremlin and the government. A preliminary decision has been made.
All Russians will most likely begin paying us 10% of their income next summer. The necessary legislative changes will be made before then, but they will take time,” said a source close to Patriarch Kirill. He clarified that the decision was a compromise. The church will receive only 7% of the tithe each month. 3% will go to the state and will be spent on social welfare. There is no exact date for the introduction of the mandatory tithe.
