And AT&T is trying to eliminate their landline service in Kalifornia. That’s a terrible idea! Providing the phone is a hardwired unit that plugs directly into a wall mount phone Jack, the phone continues to work when the electric power goes down. Obviously much more reliable than a wireless home phone or cell phone.

Depends, many people have already ditched their landlines, AT&T is probably getting close to losing money on landlines, have to maintain and service something that is dying a slow death anyway.

The issue of reliability is debatable, if the problems today are more toward the core of AT&T’s network, cell and wired phone service could be down, at some point all calls are routed over AT&T’s network and if that’s down, nothing is working.
