Iowa's Caitlin Clark breaks NCAA women's hoops scoring record

Caitlin Clark had no specific plan for how she hoped to break the NCAA women's basketball scoring record Thursday. But after doing so while also setting the Iowa Hawkeyes' single-game scoring record, Clark had to grin.

"You all knew I was going to shoot a logo 3 for the record," said Clark, who now has 3,569 career points, 49 of them coming Thursday. And indeed, every aspect of the night seemed storybook perfect for the senior star.

She was far from done, though. Clark went 8-of-10 from the field -- 5-of-7 from 3-point range -- in the first quarter, scoring 23 points. It was the most points she has scored in any first quarter in her Iowa career, and the second most of any quarter. She had 25 in the fourth quarter of a loss to Michigan on Feb. 6, 2022.

During the interview after she broke the college scoring record, she spoke well, and took time to thank the coach, her team mates, and the fans for their support.

She broke the record with a three pointer. She shot the ball between the half court line and the three point line. From what I have read she has made many shots like this! Remarkable!

BTW, this is the young woman Cheryl Swoops made snarky comments about.

Whitlock: Women’s College Basketball Phenom Caitlin Clark Comes Under Attack for Not Being Black Lesbian?

But not everyone is happy for Caitlin. Baskeball legend Sheryl Swoopes recently attacked Clark with several misguided statements Jason Whitlock responded to the nasty attacks on Caitlin Clark. Whitlock suggested the attacks were because Caitlin is a white, Catholic, straight girl. And, Whitlock suggested she would have been embraced by the female players if she were a black lesbian."

That's awesome. Congrats.

Although I'm sure there is a black transgender female waiting in the wings.

I’ve got to ask. Has she always been she?

Im surprised that old white lesbo coach down Louisiana way and formerly Baylor hasn’t chimed in with some vitriol!

She actually has, saying something about her shooting 40 times a game which is BS.

I know her and her family. Good people, but don’t be surprised when she reveals her support for wokeness. Even in Iowa, that’s where America is.

I’m hoping and praying that when they dangle the $$ and endorsements in front of her contingent on selling her soul that she remain faithful to God.

ESPN failed to mention what this student’s major was and what GPA was being carried?

Surely, someone wouldn't be THAT cocky about a record. Anything more than, "I plan to keep taking shots that are presented to me...if and when I break it, I will break it" seems over the top.

I've never seen that reported, but the great majority of D1 scholarship athletes earn real degrees. Most are in non-revenue sports and know that they have no professional future in athletics. Even in the revenue sports, most know that they aren't good enough to go professional. The problem arises primarily in the big money sports, mostly football and basketball. In swimming, gymnastics, track and field, etc., a tiny handful of athletes are good enough to have Olympic ambitions and to perhaps enjoy a few years on the professional circuit. But those kids largely know who they are by the time they're 16.

If the colleges told the NBA and NFL to run their own farm system and simply wrote off football and basketball, NCAA athletics wouuld be a completely different critter. And that's probably exactly what the colleges should do.

or the 5-7 is wrapped up in the 8-10 from the field and no mention of free throws.

But no movie career for Caitlin. She is what my Mom called “unfortunate looking.” Aka, pretty ugly.

Caitlin Clark is a fantastic basketball player and amazing to watch. However the career points record belongs to Pearl Moore who played for Francis Marion in the 70's before the NCAA recognized women's basketball. She had a career total of 4,061.
