Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

I know the general was popular, that doesn’t necessarily equal best man for the job.

From what I have heard, Zaluzhnyi insisted on conscripting 500,000 new soldiers, and Zelenski refused. Zaluzhnyi was saying in public that the war would be lost without more soldiers.

indeed it will be lost; it was also a political thing. Zaluzhnyi is right. There are more men available if only they would lower the draft age below 27.

“Hitler just wanted to “realize his plans” and Poland was “uncooperative” and “forced” Hitler to attack”

It seems Putin thinks much like Hitler. Ukraine was uncooperative, and Putin just wants to realize his plans. Of course Putin willfully brushes over Russia secretly entering the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact with Hitler, then breaking the Soviet–Polish Non-Aggression Pact so they could split Poland with the Nazis. He even claims Russia was going to fight Hitler in Czechoslovakia, but Poland wouldn't let them! Was Poland preventing Stalin from "realizing his plans" to regain what he thought was rightfully Russian land? Revisionist history that will soon be an article of faith for the Putin supporters here on FR. Putin's nickname "Putler" just became a little more accurate.

Not to mention the forced relocation of a million Poles to Siberia and Central Asia, many of them to Gulags. Total killed during the occupation is estimated at 150K. All this to a nation you had a non-aggression pact with. Stalin and Hitler were 2 sides of the same evil coin. No surprise Putin is trying to rehabilitate Stalin's image, and now it seems, Hitler's.

Went back to ‘War in Ukraine’ for a commentary on the switch of generals.

Zelenski & Zaluzhnyi:
The Ukrainian, who runs ‘War in Ukraine’, said that Zelenski wanted someone controllable, a puppet, a yes man, and Zaluzhnyi is not controllable.

Zaluzhnyi is not political, but his popularity is threatening Zelenski, whose popularity is falling, making Zaluzhnyi an existential threat in Zelenski’s mind. Worse, Zelenski’s term is up in March, and he would not be able to appoint anyone then.

[ In effect, Zelenski is now running the war, not the military. This is a recipe for disaster. ]

Next, Zelenski gave Zaluzhnyi a hero medal to say ‘go away and be quiet’, but Zelenski then had his puppet Attorney General open a couple of criminal cases against Zaluzhnyi.

One of the cases brought is for treason, and another being for actions that led to the deaths of a large number of people. These cases would only be brought, if Zaluzhnyi does not go quietly into the night.

Zaluzhnyi was mediocre as a military commander and manager, but he was very human with lots of empathy which made him so likeable.

Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi:
Zelenski began firing more top generals to complete his new team made from Syrskyi’s buddies.

Since Syrskyi is not well liked in the military, that puts Syrskyi even more under Zelenski’s control.

Syrskyi is from Moscovia’s Vladimir region, his parents & brother still live there. His father is connected to Moscovian intelligence agencies - he may have even worked for them. His son lives in Australia.

Syrskyi has no roots or connection to Ukraine, and does not speak Ukrainian; he’s just some passer by. Just another reason the military and general population does not like him.

As mediocre as Zaluzhnyi was as a commander, Syrskyi is even worse.

9 years ago during the fighting in Donbas, the Moscovians encircled the 128th Brigade by cutting the supply road. Syrskyi and others in command would not allow their men to retreat. 128th Brigade was one of the better ones in the Army.

Syrskyi tried to relieve them, but is was too little too late and was a horrendous disaster. When the relief failed, he told the troops to just stay there and take it. The only way out of the pocket was through open fields. The local commander did not listen to Syrskyi, and they successfully broke out.

This incident shows the level of Syrskyi’s rigidity which would have allowed all the troops an heavy equipment to be lost.

In the current war, Syrskyi was also responsible for the loss of Soledar & Bakhmut.

The successes in the Izum and Kharkiv regions was not due to Syrskyi’s management, but due to Moscovian ineptitude.

Syrskyi’s appointment has led to decreased morale in the Ukrainian army and this will accelerate in the coming months.

The Future:
In theory, there should not be any shortage of front line troops with Ukraine having 900,000 to Moscovia’s 600,000. But as morale collapses adding more troops will not solve the problem. Nor will Zelenski’s attempt to paper over the whole situation.

Without understanding the situation and its root causes, only more disasters will follow in the coming months.

[ Ukraine’s Top General Is Done. Avdiivka Almost Encircled ]

==
Day 716: Feb 09

Today there are a lot of updates.

First of all, Ukraine’s military leadership has undergone significant changes recently. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky replaced General Valerii Zaluzhnyi with Ukrainian Ground Forces Commander General Oleksandr Syrskyi as Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, as part of wider military leadership changes.

General Zaluzhnyi, often referred to as the “Iron General,” was widely respected and had a high approval rating. Under his leadership, Ukrainian forces were able to repel Russia’s initial assault on Kyiv and reclaim significant territories in 2022.

However, the momentum on the battlefield shifted, and a counteroffensive last year failed to achieve its objectives against heavily fortified Russian positions.

This, along with Zaluzhnyi’s public disputes with Zelenskyy over military strategies and the handling of the war, including the management of troop mobilizations and conscription laws, led to his dismissal.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi has been appointed as the new head of the Armed Forces. His promotion is seen as a recognition of his pivotal role in defending Kyiv in the early stages of the conflict and leading the successful counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region in 2022.

Over the last 15 months he was responsible for the defense of the most difficult regions, such as Kupiansk, Lyman, Soledar and Bakhmut.

Taking this into account, Syrskyi’s appointment makes sense as Ukraine is shifting into strategic defense. His main priorities right now include improving troop rotation on the front lines and incorporating new technologies into Ukraine’s military strategies.

Syrskyi has been handed to solve a very difficult problem in Avdiivka, where Russians recently penetrated the Ukrainian defense and entered the town from the north. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russian forces appear to be preparing to fight their way through Avdiivka.

The overall tempo of Russian offensive operations suggests that Russian forces have prioritized fighting through Avdiivka block-by-block from the town’s southern residential area instead of trying to further encircle the settlement from further southwest or to the north, where Russian forces have made only limited gains.

Russian forces may seek to replicate attritional light infantry frontal assaults to make tactical gains by brute force, as Russian forces did during the Battle of Bakhmut.

The current situation is almost exactly the same as it was in Bakhmut, as Russians are less than one kilometer away from cutting off the main supply line physically.

The crucial difference this time is that this supply line does not go through the field, which increases the risk for Ukrainians.

Some analysts suggests that Ukrainians may need to combine a major counterattack with a withdrawal to safe their troops, while others say that Russians overstretched their forces and may run out of reserves, which will lead to a forced regrouping, and more air for Ukrainian forces.

There is little public information to make a reasonable assessment of the probabilities of each scenario.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian withdrawal from the southern part of the town would not threaten to unhinge Ukraine’s defense in the whole region. Moreover, Ukrainian top generals ordered to build a comprehensive defense line behind Avdiivka, and the process started at the end of 2023.

Overall, Zelensky, Zaluzhnyi, and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov all acknowledged that the war has dramatically changed between 2022 and 2024, and that new approaches and strategies are necessary.

Advisor to the Head of the Ukrainian President’s Office Mykhaylo Podolyak stated that Zelensky decided to conduct a “systemic renewal of the leadership” of the Ukrainian military, including the commander-in-chief, in order to review the Ukrainian military’s actions in the past year, prevent stagnation on the front, find new functional and technological solutions that will allow Ukraine to maintain and develop the battlefield initiative, and begin the process of reforming the management of the Ukrainian military.

The changes have prompted mixed reactions among the Ukrainian public and military personnel, with some expressing concerns about the departure of a highly respected leader like Zaluzhnyi and the implications for the future of Ukraine’s military strategy.

Nonetheless, the Ukrainian government and military are focusing on adapting their strategies and ensuring that the leadership is aligned with the current and future needs of the war effort.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, command changes are normal for a state fighting a war over several years. Russian generals, for example, were changed almost after every operation or stage of the
war.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 9, 2024

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-february-9-2024

1. The Russian online community noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin did not offer any new information in his interview with American media personality Tucker Carlson and simply repeated longstanding Kremlin talking points about Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine for American audiences.

2. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev noted that Putin told the Western world in the most thorough and detailed way why Ukraine did not exist, does not exist, and will not exist.[6] Medvedev’s description of Putin’s interview further demonstrates that Russia has not abandoned its maximalist goals of eradicating Ukrainian statehood and that Putin does not intend to negotiate with Ukraine on any terms short of these goals.

3. Delays in Western aid appear to be exacerbating Ukraine’s current artillery shortages and could impact Ukraine’s long-term war effort ...

ISW continues to assess that the collapse of Western aid to Ukraine would likely lead to the eventual collapse of Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and hold off the Russian military and could allow Russian forces to push all the way to western Ukraine closer to the borders of NATO member states.

4. Newly appointed Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi identified several of his goals as commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Syrskyi stated that his primary agenda is to set clear and detailed plans for the Ukrainian command as well as to facilitate the quick distribution and delivery of necessary materiel to combat units deployed throughout the theater.

Syrskyi stated that he intends to balance between having Ukrainian forces conduct combat missions and building Ukraine’s combat power by restoring and training Ukrainian units

Syrskyi added that the introduction of new technical solutions and the implementation of lessons learned from successful modern combat experience, specifically with drones and electronic warfare (EW) systems, is a path towards Ukrainian victory, echoing themes from former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi’s recent focus on using technological innovation and adaptation to offset Russian forces‘ numerical advantages.

Syrskyi further discussed these goals at a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on February 9 in which the two discussed plans for improving logistics and the quality of training for Ukrainian forces in 2024.
