When I joined up in 1982, I scored 143 on the ASVAB test, qualifying me for any of the over 400 MOS’s (Military Occupational Skill) available in the US Army. I selected a 43 ECHO billet- Parachute Rigger. The school was 13 weeks in duration.

Another recruit scored equally high on their ASVAB test, joining the US Navy. The recruit selected a computer skill-based billet, with a 52-week duration school. This billet required a high ASVAB score.

FWIW A forklift operator school was 3 weeks in duration. This billet did not require a high ASVAB score.

I believe that in 1982, an ASVAB score was considered to be at par with an IQ score.

I also believe that the current ASVAB score uses a different metric for scoring than the 1982 score.

I completed 8th grade, and quit high school in the first month, leaving home at the age of 15.

The US Army required a HS Diploma or a GED to be accepted into the service.

I took an adult night class at the local high school to prepare for the GED test, of which I scored a B+ equivalent grade.

I had also worked as a journeyman carpenter for several years prior to taking the ASVAB test.

A 50 ASVAB score seems very low, and likely limiting in available positions.

Thank you for your service. I was a Navy Brat, but I never served.
