During his electoral campaign, Milei vowed to "exhaust all diplomatic channels so that the Falkland Islands become Argentine again."

"We have to see how we are going to get them back. It is clear that the war option is not a solution. We had a war, which we lost. Now we have to make every effort to recover the islands through diplomatic channels,"

*The Argentines have never colonized The Falklands. The Brits have been there since 1833.* Monroe spoke of it in 1823-no teeth?Or do the Argentines have more balls?

*I remember reading back during the first Falklands War that there is a good possibility of oil being nearby these islands and that is the reason Argentina wants them..* All of which is true none of which is relevant.

*distraction from domestic political problems- it’s practically a tradition at this point.* Wag the dog it works.

This is a common mistake I see many conservatives make when they come to office… go big or go home! It becomes a defining feature the Left will use to bury him… it’ll be called The Faulklands Folly.

From what I’ve seen, I don’t think he ran on this platform. He should do what he promised.

Negotiate giving it back.
Guarantee full independence, own tax law, control of territory, etc.
Make it last at least a generation.

If you look at the existing small population (less than 4k), people would have time to make plans.

Anyone born there can get a Brit passport and go elsewhere or stay.

Correct.

Saying “take back” is as false as the “Palestinians” as it were “taking back ‘Palestine’” from the Israelis.

The place has got to be a money pit for Britain. Oil and mineral profits can be negotiated. Milei speaks strongly for a negotiation while Yahoo interprets it as threatening-fake news.

The US. Turn the place into a penal colony for border crossers. No transportation in or out. Work with them. Win-win. Brits? No big deal as they invented racism.

I suspect the UK's navy, namely submarines, would be decisive in an actual engagement. But does the UK have the political will to use it decisively?

If Javier Milei is smart, he'll send 1,000 Argentines on fishing boats to the Falklands. Then they'll put their flag on the islands. What will the Brits do about that? Tony Blair will have ordered the troops to fire back to defend the islands.

But what will Rishi Sunak do in this scenario?

If he’s smart.

Come on. He speaks of negating, not playing stupid pranks. The country’s big problems are economic and this issue has no effect on them. Just remember the generals in ‘82 were failing. Milei has bigger fish to fry.

Now is the time to take the Falklands. The next British PM might be the second coming of the Iron Lady. So if you have a chance to take it, why not go for it?

I think Argentina has a big head because they won the World Cup. Maybe some photos and videos of the previous Falklands war failure can help them come back to reality. Britain could’ve bombed mainland Argentina if they wanted.

They should have. Al Haig wouldn’t let them. Taking out a parliament capitol building would have sent the message home. Nips it in the bud the thought of trying it again.

They did bomb a military facility as I recall. The rest of the continent was sensitive of the gringos. This was 4 years after we were sensitive enough to hand over the canal in Panama. If there is something to be gained from any grievance the grievance will be milked for all it’s worth. Eg: blacks and slavery.

The Monroe Doctrine applies here. 2000 Brits living in an isolated enclave are not worth making a big issue over. They can continue to live there in peace as Argentine citizens. Having Milei as their PM just might be better.

Nah. The Argies are just gonna have to accept that the islands are not theirs and the locals don't want them.

Problem with the Falklands is Argentina has no legitimate claim, and never has.

The islands were terra nullius when Dutch, British, French and Spanish ships discovered and settled them. Chile, not Argentina, was the closest country but no native Chilean or Argentine indigenous peoples even knew those islands existed. They'd never been settled by humans.

The Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was created in 1776; at the same time Spain acquired the French colony (Port St. Louis). So Spain took control over the French territory, and England retained its claim to its territory. This is the map from the year prior to the Viceroyalty being established.

Paul McCartney wrote a song called "Give Ireland Back To The Irish".

Maybe the same sentiment applies here.

Give the Falklands back to the originally British Settlers? (Descendants, obviously.)

They're the ones that are currently there...

No. The islands are British for over 200 years. Like Gibraltar, they are British.

Ireland is full of Irish. They have never been any Argentinians living in the Falklands.

How about we kick all the US out of Guam and give in back to Spain?
