I would not be especially concerned about faculty members being on the boards specifically of pharmaceutical companies. Rather, their sitting on the boards of any company, and pulling down an average of a quarter of a million dollars per year, is troubling enough. I am not so much worried by the thought of any possible conflict of interest as I am by the incontrovertible reality that their limited time and energy resources are being "siphoned off" by major side-gigs. How could they possibly be fully devoting themselves to their scholarly activities (instructing classes; publishing academic papers; etc.) while also seeing to these corporate matters?

Or are these board memberships comparable to the "no-show" jobs that Tony Soprano was always setting up for his fellow gangsters? Does sitting on a corporate board essentially entail no more effort than relaxing on a lawn chair and sunning oneself while the real workers attend to their duties?

Regards,

All this money flying around from pocket to pocket, and no federal income tax paid by NFP’s like Harvard. Sounds like time for tax reform. Make the Ivy’s pay their Fair Share!

Turns out HARVARD IS THE JOKE OF THE CENTURY...IT IS THE PUNCHLINE IN COMEDY ACTS...AND IT IS RIGHTLY DESERVED.

Harvard is NOT a place where serious people want to go.
